To The Hartford and others like me:
I applied and was approved for The Hartford LTD monthly benefit for mental health issues in December 2021 and started receiving monthly benefit payments retroactively to some time in October 2021. Up until The Hartford LTD claims department suddenly terminated my monthly benefits on October 13, 2022, I was required maintain mental health treatment. I saw my psychiatrist on at least a monthly basis for check-ins, assessment and med checks. I saw a therapist intermittently for awhile and in mid August, after having suicidal ideation and a plan, I started seeking mental health services at our county facilities. I was assigned a case manager to see on a weekly basis, an education and voc rehab counselor to see about twice a month and eventually was able to start meeting on a weekly basis with an assigned therapist. I still seek services from the county despite the LTD termination.
The Hartford Claims Department including , Ability Analyst Shelly, and her supervisor, Shunna, LTD Team Leader Claims GBC - Group Benefit Claim Operations-Sacramento, wrongfully terminated my LTD claim within about 1 year of the 2 year maximum while having no records from recent county treatment providers that I had mentioned above and to Shelly prior to termination decision.
After going through a year of occasional check-ins for forms to be completed by my psychiatrist and notes of our sessions to be provided along with any additional family/other Dr and or therapy records/notes, I had received benefits with no issues.
The Hartford LTD claims division decided to pay for an independent "peer evaluation" to be done and the evaluating psychiatrist, without giving him notice of all of the county services I was receiving besides services from my psychiatrist. The paid independent reviewer decided to agree (in a report dated only days before my denial) with The Hartford, that as of 7/1/22, I was considered to no longer be psychologically disabled under the terms of The Hartford's definition of disability and was fully capacitated to work.
This is all while my own Psychiatrist refuted such decision and to no avail attempted to contact the peer reviewer on 9/30/22 to provide any further details that the peer reviewer might need in order to come to a different conclusion in his report. He could only reach the reviewer's voicemail.
Anyway, the claims team, in particular Shelly and her Supervisor Shunna wrongfully handled my claim and weighed the decision to terminate my LTD benefits mainly on a report done by a paid independent peer reviewer and not on facts, notes and statements made by my long treating psychiatrist nor the facts, notes and statements made by myself or county mental health service providers.
I have appealed the LTD termination and provided mental health county records and letters of support to hopefully get the decision overturned.
If the decision is not overturned very shortly, I will seek further remedial action. I have been so mistreated by The Hartford and this termination and appeal process has led me back to a lot lower mental health status, including an unbelievable increase in suicidal thoughts and planning, that I had not been experiencing as much before all the turmoil. I hope I will be able to overcome this issue as soon as possible.

Read moreDO NOT AND I REPEAT DO NOT GET INSURANCE WITH THIS COMPANY!!!!!! I got into a car accident Friday June 13th 2025. I made a claim that night and got a call from them Monday morning. They started the claim process: towing the car, ordering a new car seat, and getting me a rental. I thought everything was going well but I was wrong. I spoke to Emily McGinnis who was my claims adjuster. My claim adjuster was out of office the end of june so I was not able to speak to her about my claim. July 1st rolled around and I called her and she said that she had not heard anything from the shop about my car. I called the shop and they said they have not heard from the insurance. Okay?? I tried to reach out to Emily again later that week but then I got the message saying she was out of office until JULY 21st. While she was out of office I had to call the basic 1-800 number for help and of course these people knew nothing about my case. Still hadn’t heard anything about my car. Fast forward I called multiple times about my car and nobody knew anything. We were coming up on a month and my rental time was running out. They called me on July 16th EXACTLY 30 DAYS after my accident to say my car was actually totaled out. They then refused to extend my rental and the shop told me they told the insurance it was totaled out two weeks prior to when they told me. They said they would extend the rental. They didn’t. Then after a month and a half of bs with them I mailed in the title and the loss paperwork. These people said i didn’t send the title. I sent the tile. It was the last page in the pile of paperwork I sent them. Almost two months later I don’t have a check to put a down payment on a new car. Please spare yourself and look for insurance anywhere else but here. And if you call and speak to a Maria, she is the rudest individual I have ever had the displeasure of speaking to. She tried to out talk me the entire time i was trying to explain the situation to her and tell her i hadn’t heard from the loss department. She then proceeded to raise her voice and said they did call and that she doesn’t have to prove it to me. I never asked for proof. I wanted to know if they called the correct number. I hate these people and i hope nothing but the worst for every individual...
Read moreI am a senior citizen who attempted to pay my auto insurance with The Hartford (they advertise on tv as AARP insurance). I called customer service on Oct. 30, (policy renews 10/31)and gave the agent, Stephanie, my debit card number. Stephanie emailed a receipt that I requested with a confirmation number. A month later the RMV sends a letter canceling my car registration for lack of insurance. I immediately called The Hartford Insurance and customer service investigated, with me on hold 18 minutes, and said the payment never went through, even though they had a copy of the receipt I was sent. Nobody ever told me that there was a problem when they emailed my receipt. I called the bank who said payment should go through no problem. Calling back The Hartford to pay, again, they want a $33 late fee to reinstate me. I asked to speak to a supervisor to explain the payment situation and after 10 minutes on hold, I hung up. An hour later I called one final time and the agent was adamant that I had to pay the $33 late fee. Tomorrow morning I will go to the nearby Independent Insurance Agency to give them my business as The Hartford doesn’t care about a five year customer’s $1300 policy ,who happens to be a senior citizen and always paid the year in full in advance. The Hartford, it turns out, is lacking true, caring, customer service and treat dedicated customers terribly. I recommend anyone thinking of giving their hard earned money to The Hartford Insurance find a better, customer service oriented company. Update After visiting two independent brokers, both advised to reinstate with Hartford and then, from a stronger position, change companies. Once the notice of cancellation is filed, I am not in a strong position. The Hartford did, in fact, refund the $33 charge, two months later. Causing unnecessary aggravation for a retired senior is bad business and shame on AARP for selling themselves out to a company...
