We were excited to purchase our first cuckoo clock and visited the Holland Clock Company during the recent Tulip Festival in Holland, Michigan. The store had a beautiful and extensive selection on display, and after spending time exploring the options, we finally found the perfect clock.
The store manager, who also acted as the salesperson, informed us that the clock we selected was the last one available, and that many of the clocks on display are the only ones in stock. While signs clearly stated that customers should not touch the clocks, it was evident that this policy was not enforced, as anyone could handle the displays.
Despite that, we were thrilled with our purchase. The manager personally packed the clock for us, and we brought it home eager to set it up. We carefully followed the included instructions and even called the store to confirm we were assembling it correctly. A kind young woman on the phone assured us that we were following the correct steps.
However, when attaching one of the weights, it unexpectedly fell to the ground along with a small latch. Concerned, I contacted the store immediately. They asked us to ship the clock back, which we did promptly.
Once the clock arrived at the store, I received a call from the manager. Unfortunately, instead of expressing concern or offering support, he was dismissive and condescending. He insisted that the clock had been thoroughly inspected and blamed us for the damage, implying it must have been mishandled during setup. His tone was unnecessarily rude, and I was shocked by the lack of professionalism—especially after making a nearly $600 purchase. Had I encountered this behavior earlier, I would have reconsidered buying anything from the store.
While we did eventually receive the repaired clock, which appears to be working well, the manager’s attitude significantly marred what should have been a joyful and memorable experience.
My advice to future customers: avoid purchasing a "last one available" item and be cautious when dealing with the store manager. The quality of the product may meet expectations, but the service experience left much...
