This “used bookstore” in Johnson City, Tennessee unfortunately promotes a leftist/communist agenda to the public.
For used books, the prices are high, while the employees are rude. This is a poor recipe for financial success.
For example, I personally witnessed one employee behind the counter yell at a customer for having the audacity to enter the store without a mask—when no mask mandate was even in place at that time by local or state government. When the customer sought clarification by asking a simple question, the unrefined employee erupted with anger, then began to argue in a very unprofessional manner with the gentleman while a host of other customers watched.
Customer service seems to have been sacrificed for the immature self-gratification that comes with the virtue signaling of our day. Clearly triggered, I thought the pusillanimous employee behind the counter may actually cry. He acted as if he suddenly needed a time out in a little safe space to recover from his catharsis. Should such rude business practices be tolerated by mindful customers?
This incident resulted in the customer replying that he would simply take his business to a place that was more politically neutral—rather than support an establishment that’s driven by asinine and liberal ideation (good for him).
I noticed one other person put the book he was looking at down, removed his mask, and exited the store (another good call).
After that, I also decided such hateful behavior should not be rewarded with any purchase.
This place used to be more in line with basic capitalism and free speech (you know, what made it possible for such a store to exist in the first place), but increasingly progressive policies seem to have limited specific books from even being considered for trade (Ayn Rand, anyone?), as well as the variety of books now available for purchase. Leftist thinking historically results in banned books.
Let’s hope this leftist business will rethink its poor policies or at least change its management. Until then, being a published academic writer, I would advise avoiding this establishment.
Let the free market selectively dismiss such socialist “experiments,” as is inevitable with such failed...
Read more(I'm only giving this one star because I can't put zero) my family and I have shopped here for years. Because who wants to spend $20 on a book they may or may not like? We've only had small mishaps and problems every so often. My brother and I went in yesterday and he bought two seasons of Game of Thrones Blu-Ray DVDs. We went home and they did not work. One season was scratched really badly and the other one was also in really bad condition. We brought them back today (less than 24 hours and a 30-40 minute drive from where I live) AFTER TOLD TO BRING THEM BACK IF WE HAD PROBLEMS and were told we could only receive store credit. We spent FORTY dollars on these DVDs that DID. NOT. WORK. only to be told we couldn't have our money back for something they shouldn't have put out in the first place. But not only that. We can only spend that money in THEIR store and only on things that do not have YELLOW stickers. So I cannot use MY money on NEW books, records or anything that they do not want you to use store credit on. Employees are very rude and condescending. Mostly the women. Never had a problem with the men. I will NOT be going back. It's a joke...
Read moreThis used book store and record store was a fabulous find for my daughter and I.
First, on behalf of my daughter, I'd like to inform readers that they do carry Manga. We didn't see Skip Beat there, but there was a nice selection of cheap/affordable Manga for my young teen daughter.
I've been to a LOT of used book stores. This one is very well organized, and has two floors of books (and an elevator for handicap access). It's arranged in a fashion similar to a library. AND THEY HAVE RECORDS AT REASONABLE PRICES! Yay! Not a huge assortment. But the search is half the fun.
Prices were reasonable. Some books were a couple bucks, some were over $10. It looked like demand and popularity influenced pricing. All the books I looked at were in good condition.
The staff was very friendly. My daughter had lost my car keys somewhere right before closing time, and as I was walking out to see if she dropped them in a lot, someone turned them in (Thank you kind person! If we ever meet I'll buy you a book!), and the cashier ran the keys out to me. (I use a cane and walking is difficult.)
This used book store was a great find, and we'll...
