After being an avid customer of Scheels since their opening day, our relationship with the store abruptly ended today due to our encounter with assistant manager Paul.
While parking, our daughter found a wallet. We brought it inside, hoping the owner was still in the store and could be paged to retrieve it. Due to a previous bad experience with turning in a wallet, we didn’t feel comfortable leaving it with the staff. We explained that we’d hold onto it until the owner came forward, and if not, we’d turn it over to the police. The staff seemed displeased and called over Paul.
When Paul arrived, we explained the situation again. However, he immediately became defensive, questioning how he could trust us with the wallet. We assured him we just wanted to help and would wait for the owner, but his tone grew more condescending. When my husband pointed out that we wouldn’t have brought the wallet in if we had bad intentions, Paul became even more disrespectful. After I firmly told him to stop his comments, he threatened to kick us out of the store.
After they unsuccessfully tried to contact the wallet owner, we left our information and departed, deciding not to spend another dollar at Scheels. Being 32 weeks pregnant, I wasn’t going to stand there any longer, especially with Paul being so rude. Had he handled the situation differently, the outcome could have been much better.
While in the store, we attempted to reach the wallet owner ourselves via Facebook and left our contact info with the store. While out running other errands, Paul called again, maintaining his condescending tone, saying, “NAME is at the store. Where did you take the wallet?” I told him I didn’t like his tone and told him to pass our information to the wallet owner so we could handle it directly.
After years of shopping at Scheels, holding their store cards, and even making them part of our big adoption day celebration 7 years ago, this experience has completely soured our view of the store. Paul’s behavior, especially as a manager, was appalling, and the staff’s attitude was equally disappointing. Instead of being understanding, they took offense and made the situation unnecessarily difficult.
After speaking with the wallet’s owner, we returned to the Scheels parking lot to meet him and return his wallet. He was grateful and completely understood why we didn’t feel comfortable leaving it at the store.
Update with response to Scheels reply:
I’m sorry, but there really doesn’t seem to be a solution for this situation. We were excited to choose your store as our first family outing after my daughter and I were in a car accident, and I spent several days in the hospital. We thought it would be a fun, productive, and low-stress activity. However, we were left completely disgusted and hurt by the way your team treated us. Given the disrespect we experienced, I doubt we’ll ever return, and if we do, it won’t be for many years, if not decades. While you’ve lost our business, I hope this serves as a training...
Read moreWithout a doubt, this store gets a 5 star rating, and a 5 star rating still doesn't seem enough for this store. When you go to Scheels it isn't just visiting a store, it's an experience where you could spend hours and hours enjoying yourself. There's just so much to mention, but I'll start from the beginning. Right when you walk in, you are greeted with the big fish tank. It's huge, and seeing all the different fish was really cool. Then, if you walk a little further, then you run into the very cool indoor ferris wheel. So attractions aside, Scheels specialty is sporting goods. With that said, they sell everything you can think of when it comes to sports. Any sport or sporting hobby you're interested in, they have stuff for it. From basketball, football, soccer, baseball, tennis, golf, running, and much more. Hunting, camping, and fishing stuff are also sold here with large sections for them, so there is a lot of stuff to browse through if that is your interest. There's just stuff for everyone. But there isn't just sporting stuff here, there's also a toys section for kids and a home decor section. Also, other fun activities they have are a little arcade and two mini bowling lanes. It's just so much fun for everyone of all ages. They also have a big candy shop/ cafe, which is really convenient when you need a drink or snack after exploring around the store for a while. The candy shop also sells a lot of jerky and fudge/chocolate. There were many highlights for me, but I think my favorite moment was riding the indoor ferris wheel. It's also worth mentioning that there are always employees walking around to help out, so they are highly accessible. All the employees I spoke with were very friendly and helpful. I did my best to mention everything this store had, but I'm sure I left some stuff out. Reading this doesn't give the Scheels experience any justice. Words aren't enough for it. A person just has to go and experience it for themselves, and I highly recommend going to this store if in the area. I know I go here every time I...
Read moreI am normally not one to leave reviews especially bad ones but I felt treated very poorly. For context this is my first “real season” of golf that I am actively trying to get better and play more. My driver was getting old as it is very worn so I went into scheels looking for a new one. One of my buddies had gone to their driver sim and bought a new driver from them a couple weeks back and suggested I go and try a couple drivers out before I buy one. After seeing a bunch of positive reviews and the golf department looking like they know their stuff, I went in. They definitely had a lot of nice options and their golf section was amazing. The problem I had was one of the salesmen. Hunter was stocking a shelve when I came over and asked him if I could try a couple drivers out in the sim. He then told me that if I went in there I had to buy a new driver when I came out. I told him that I was new to golf and just wanted to try a couple of drivers out to get a feel for what is out there and then make my descion. He told me I had to either buy it as soon as I was done in the sim or he wouldn’t let me in there. Granted I am on the younger side and I wasent dressed in golf attire so I didn’t look like I was a golfer but that shouldn’t be a case. I get they don’t want people just going into the sim for fun and swinging a club, but I wasn’t trying to just go in there and have fun. I genuinely was trying to get a feel for a new driver and see what options were out there. I didn’t want to be forced to buy a driver considering they are very expensive. I feel like I was stereotyped as Hunter probably thought I was just some kid going to have fun. Hopefully the staff can be more considerate and not as judgements when someone wants to try...
