(long story) While visiting Key West my boyfriend and I went swimming near the fort Zachary Taylor picnic area at the beach. We noticed a pelican on one of the rock formations/islands near the beach and decided to swim out and get a closer look. We watched it for about an hour while talking and tanning on the rocks. The pelican didn't move from the rock it was standing on for the entire time that we were there even though they were a couple of groups of people near it (about 10-20 feet away). We even noticed that the pelican had a fishing lure trapped in its wing and fishing line around its body that was preventing it from flying. One of the other guys on the rocks also noted that the bird was quite thin. My boyfriend and I discussed helping the bird but knew that it would make it uncomfortable and possibly bite creating a safety issue that might further injure the bird. We left the rocks but the thought of the struggling bird made my heart sink. So we called the Key West Wildlife Center and a very nice lady answer the phone. I gave her a description of the Pelican and where it was located. She then told me that Pelicans are Territorial and the bird would probably return to that spot if it left. The next day I received a text with a picture of the pelican. They had found the bird, take it in, and giving it the care it needed. Words cannot describe how amazing that moment was for me. Thank you Key West Wildlife Center, stay awesome! I will remember this moment for a...
Read moreI am Sam from Pennsylvania, found a baby rabbit who was mauled by cats. I tried to find a way to alleviate the pain of his lacerations and torn off skin. There was no facility open in my state. I searched nation wide for a facility and found 24/7 Key West Wild Life Center. I called to obtain information on how to treat these wounds until we can get professional help, and a woman answered during the 11:00pm shift. She was more concerned about my location than the actual welfare of the bunny. Her PROFESSIONAL opinion was to research google (obviously I fking did this before trying to find a facility for information). She then proceeded to hang up on me mid sentence as I was attempting to explain my location situation. Ive got a witness and I am more than psed. I am...

These folk do a good job helping injured local wildlife and trying to get them released back into the wild and so they need the support of visitors donations to keep the place open so do try and spare the time to have a look around their centre and see the creatures they are currently caring for. It is not a Zoo or Disney World but just a plain and simple rescue centre, open to thee public where you can see the animals close up and see what they are doing for them, so don't expect flashing lights and a laser show.........They are right by the sea front and there is a big free car park near by and the West Martello Tower (gardens really) are within close walking...
