This guy knows his stuff.
I needed an emergency fix and a new rear wheel for my bike during a long extensive endurance trip. A local woman in the area recommended this guy. I wasn't sure what to expect at first. I showed up at 6pm right as he was closing, he also had a cold and was about to prepare dinner with his mother who had just come to visit.
Nevertheless, he took my bike in and got to work. I had a hard time reading this guy, he was hardened, worn for wear, but he did know his stuff...which I respected, as I hadn't really been there for a chat anyway and needed to get off the islands before it got dark.
The repair took 30 minutes and cost $100 which we had to haggle down to. A bit more than I expected to pay, but I think in the long run it was worth it and I got a good deal. The wheel lasted the other 500 miles of the trip with the 80lb pack I had on the back and I am still using it to this day.
Lastly, after he finished the repair, he invited me to have spaghetti dinner with him and his mom...completely unexpected! Those carbs were just what I needed after a long day of riding. As dark was approaching, and he offered me a little one person hostel by the shop if I needed it, with a shower and all. I turned him down in exchange for another 25 miles down the road, but I appreciated the offer. Don't let first impressions fool you - this...
Read moreGreat Great service. New owner is one of the nicest people you will meet. We spent 6000 dollars with Outer Banks bikes and they act like they did you a favor in selling you a bike. I considered opening a bike shop here in the Outer Banks just because of the poor service with Outer Banks Bikes. Then I found the Bike Barn. We stopped in while riding our bikes to look at a dog carrier and the owner gave us a great deal on a used one that looked almost new. He noticed that the tires needed air and took care of that. I told him that I had my bike in the shop at Outer Banks Bike the day before because 8th gear kept slipping and they charged me 60 bucks to replace the chain on a bike I paid over 1000 dollars for back in August and rode at best maybe 25 times since owning and they are saying I wore the chain out. Plus it started slipping shortly after buying it, I just didn't bring it right back, but it got worse enough that I had to bring it in. Guess what, one of the reasons I didn't bring it right back was because they are just not nice people. Mike at the Bike Barn is a completely different and was great to work with. You won't be...
Read moreBefore the Giro Synthe helmet came out recently, I visited this shop with my little sister to see if they had any other Giros I'd like. I personally favor Giro because on two occasions they saved my life (both were drunk drivers hitting me in a college town - neither was a student).
I was looking around when the employee asked if I needed help. I explained I was looking for a Giro. When he told me they didn't sell the brand, I thanked him and explained why I personally was only interested in Giro. I was shocked when the employee got mad at me and exclaimed "maybe you won't be so lucky next time!" (referring to getting hospitalized by cars).
Yeah, I never went back and never want anyone to experience that disrespect. On the other hand, Outer Banks Bicycle on the beach road is friendly and helpful every...
