I am not completely satisfied by what is my first ride on an Amtrak. I thought it would be a better alternative to riding with all the criminals on greyhound but it is not. Amtrak, like greyhound, does not check ID. My train departed from Tucson six hours late. I wanted the experience of riding in comfort on a train but thanks to the delay of my first train leaving from Tucson I now have to take a bus from Los Angeles all the way to San Francisco where I will then get to ride a train to Portland. Union Station in Los Angeles is disgusting. In the bathroom there was a syringe laying on the floor and a woman in the men's restroom. There was an attendant in the restroom who seemed unconcerned with all of this. As I was waiting for the bus to connect me from Los Angeles to San Francisco a woman hit another woman. Security did nothing about it and still let her board the bus.
Correction: My bus was only to Bakersfield. I am much happier now but everything else still stands. I understand the six hour delay could be some kind of strange occurrence and it only left a bad impression on me because this is my first ride, but I still consider a six hour delay to be too much. Most of my complaints are probably with Union Station in Los Angeles more than anything but I maintain that they should be checking ID to keep the rifraf out. While I sit on the train now there is a single woman in the seat across from me with four children who look nothing alike making lots of noise. Starting from Tucson there was a woman in the lobby listening to music without headphones and the attendant never said a word.

Read moreI take amtrak from LA Union Station frequently to SJ Diridon station. I love the lounge, the beautiful architecture. I also like the staff who is always ready to help. Location is not the best because of traffic. Overall, great experience.
Every type of transportation will experience some type of delay like traffic in a freeway due to accidents, planes being delayed due to mechanical or weather issues. So, everyone has high expectations that train travel is flawless. Even in Europe, there are train strikes and if one is not prepared to walk or take a bus or other means of transportation, one will be very upset as well. I love the waiting area especially the lounge. There's food options and central to all public transportation. I have traveled by plane and buses for many years, but train travel by far is the least stressful and...
Read moreI have been floored by the immense awesomeness I've been treated with today. I had at a red eye (2:55am) bus ride to Bakersfield and came in at 9pm looking for baggage claim to check in some bags so I could explore DTLA a bit but the office was closed and this lovely woman (can't remember her beautiful name) went out of her way to tell Chris and Mike about my situation and they took care of me. The people of Amtrak are amazing and I will definitely be a returning customer after this spectacular showmanship of customer service they've displayed. Thank...
