Wave Plastic Surgery — Local services in Los Angeles

It was December 2020, and, 8 months into the pandemic, my eyes, which were usually bright and alert, had finally begun to show signs of fatigue. For the better part of a year, they had been called upon to express everything that the rest of my face, under the veil of a mask, could not. The skin underneath my brow, once taut and lifted, had begun to yield to the effects of gravity and the result was a subtle hooding at the outer corners of my eyes. I had to do something, and fast, so I called Wave Plastic Surgery Center and scheduled a zoom consultation with Ailla.

On the day of our virtual consultation, I explained to Ailla that I was unhappy with the excess skin on my eyelids and she over went a few options for correcting the problem. She was very informative & straightforward as she explained the procedures and went over pricing with me. No pushy sales tactics. In the end, I decided to go with an upper blepharoplasty to be performed by Dr Denise Wong who normally works out of Wave's San Francisco office.

The following week, I had another virtual appt, this time with Dr Wong, who explained the procedure and answered all of my questions about recovery and aftercare. She told me she would be making an incision across each eyelid, trimming the excess skin, and then stitching them back together with sutures. The downtime would be approximately two weeks. I was a little bit nervous as this was my first time going under the knife, but after meeting with Dr Wong, I felt confident that I was in good hands.

On the day of my surgery, I arrived at the office at around 9am and met Dr Wong. She went over my lab tests with me and took some measurements of my eyelids before I was ushered into a very sterile-looking surgery room. Once I was on the operating table and hooked up to IV sedation, Dr Wong arrived and said a few things to me, none of which I remember. They injected me with some local anesthetic, and although I was not completely unconscious for the procedure, I didn't feel any pain until maybe the very end. Dr Wong was pleased with the way the incisions turned out and sent me home with some arnica, a couple of steroids, and some medicated eye ointment. In the weeks following my surgery, both Dr Wong and Ailla reached out several times to make sure that I was okay and that my eyelids were healing properly.

It's been about a month since my surgery and my eyelids are almost completely healed. The incision scars are almost imperceptible today and my eyes look larger and more refreshed than they did before. The downtime was minimal and I endured very little pain throughout the entire process from beginning to end.. I'm so pleased with my results that I want to get my lower eyelids done now! I am truly grateful to Dr Wong, Ailla, and the rest of the very professional staff at Wave, who went above and beyond to make this a comfortable, rewarding and positive experience for me! Dr. Wong is awesome and she does amazing work. I appreciate her thoroughness and expertise. My friends raved about her impeccable stitch work and I felt she wanted to make sure the work she did was the best she could provide. She took her time with marking me to make sure it was as symmetric as she can make it. I appreciated that. She checked in me often during surgery to make sure I was comfortable and had everything I needed. I wish I could say I loved my entire experience.

I did not have the best experience with Sara the patient coordinator. At first she was attentive and got back to me promptly. It was towards the end after my surgery and deposit was provided that she was difficult to get a hold of, rarely got back to me and I felt like I had to hunt her down to get answers towards the end. She had sent my an email with dates of all my appts so I can put it in my calendar as requested. 1 month before the surgery, I find out the surgery time and post op location was changed without notice. If I hadn’t asked about it, I would have been at the wrong place at the wrong time. The post op location/time was changed 2x and both times I wouldn’t have known if I hadn’t asked to verify the dates/location. I sent her emails and left messages with the front desk several times and rarely got a response back. I feel as a patient coordinator you need to be available and get back to patients in a timely manner, make sure the appts you provide in writing is booked on the correct date and time and if there are changes to contact the patient to make sure everything still works for them. Im not sure what happened with Sara but the care coordination was horrible and I am not pleased with the service that was provided. I do care coordination for a living and manage a panel of 200+ patients, if it wasn’t for my nature to ask for written verification of dates and times I’m sure I would have been to my appts late or had to rearrange my schedule to accommodate the unexpected last minute changes.
