The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) frequently challenges anti-panhandling ordinances, arguing they violate the First Amendment's protection of free speech. Many of these ordinances, often disguised as public safety measures, are deemed unconstitutional for restricting the content of speech or targeting specific groups. Here's a more detailed breakdown: Key Arguments in ACLU Lawsuits: Free Speech: The ACLU argues that panhandling, which involves asking for money, is a form of speech protected by the First Amendment. Content-Based Restrictions: Laws that specifically target panhandling or restrict it based on the content of the speech (asking for money) are often considered unconstitutional. Public Safety as a Pretext: The ACLU frequently challenges ordinances that claim to be based on public safety concerns but are, in reality, designed to suppress panhandling and remove people experiencing homelessness from public spaces. Discrimination: In some cases, the ACLU highlights the discriminatory impact of panhandling laws, noting that they disproportionately affect people of color and those experiencing homelessness. Examples of ACLU Involvement: Albuquerque, New Mexico: The ACLU of New Mexico successfully challenged an ordinance that restricted panhandling, arguing it violated the First Amendment. Illinois: The ACLU of Illinois fought an ordinance prohibiting panhandling in public streets and medians, resulting in a federal court declaring the law unconstitutional. Slidell, Louisiana: The ACLU of Louisiana sued the city of Slidell over an ordinance requiring panhandlers to register with the police, leading to a temporary halt in enforcement while the ordinance's legality was being reviewed. Worcester, Massachusetts: The ACLU of Massachusetts challenged two anti-panhandling ordinances, arguing they violated the right to solicit donations in public, and a federal judge eventually struck them down. Greeley, Colorado: The ACLU of Colorado successfully challenged a "median ban" that targeted panhandlers, leading the city to agree to stop enforcing the ban. Sacramento, California: The ACLU Foundation of Northern California and Legal Services of Northern California filed a lawsuit against an ordinance that restricts panhandling, arguing it violates First Amendment rights. Overall, the ACLU's litigation on panhandling demonstrates a commitment to defending the First Amendment rights of individuals, particularly those who are vulnerable and marginalized, by challenging laws that restrict their ability to express themselves in...

Kristen is your "WOW" barista making a perfect custom shots salted caramel latte. I've been visiting SSM since shortly after it opened. Wonderful fresh food, good variety of options & fantastic friendly staff. My ever growing list of AM favorites: deviled eggs, quiche, local CO coffee roasts, farmer's toast, scones & muffins. Now "fully" retired I'm working thru their lunch and dinner take-away options: soups, salads, sandwiches, entrees, lemon bar, carrot cake, cookies, etc. There is something for everyone's taste buds. The gazpacho soup is a must try! I travel often and seek out the Locals' best spots. SSM never disappoints! It reminds me of the best small fresh market shops, deli, w unique foodie gifts on the East/West coasts, tucked close in to beautiful natural scenery of Louisville's Old Town walkable charm & nearby Flatirons/Rocky Mtns views and walking-biking trails. Think ...small cafe, fresh deli food & best ingredients, conversationally interesting owner (often on-site), clean bright environment, wonderful kitchen staff/cooks/chefs friendly stepping forward out at the counter with tasty new suggestions...that's consistently South Street...

I can’t say enough good things about South Street Market! When my husband was sick, a group of friends generously organized meal deliveries for us twice a week. Every single meal was outstanding—beautifully prepared, fresh, and comforting at a time when we really needed it. The variety was fantastic, and it was clear that a lot of care went into both the cooking, packaging and delivering.

Not only was the food amazing, but the service was seamless and reliable every single time. Knowing we could count on these nourishing meals was such a gift. I am so grateful to South Street Market for helping make a tough time a little easier—and I’ll absolutely be a regular customer moving forward. Highly, highly recommend! Thank you Barbie, Nancy and your entire operation!...

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Run, don’t walk, to South Street Market! Their oat milk vanilla latte is to die for—they’ve got that good GOOD espresso that hits just right every time. I had the blueberry muffin and honestly, it’s the best I’ve ever had. And don’t even get me started on the spicy Italian sandwich—absolutely knocks it out of the park for lunch. The only thing better than the food is the kind, welcoming service. Do yourself a favor and support this amazing local gem!

South Street Market has quickly become a staple to the downtown Louisville scene and has certainly contributed to the sense of community in the town. Barbie, Diane, and the staff always offer up warm greetings and willing to help however they can. The scratch made food in their cases along with the hand-picked local goods that Barbie has sourced makes SSM my go-to, favorite market. Oh, and the recent addition of the espresso machine is fantastic.

South Street Market catered our baby shower at Tilt and it was an absolute hit! We were able to feed over 50 people for less than $20 a head - and we should note the food was beautiful and DELICIOUS! Nancy and her team advised what would be appropriate for the size of the party, atmosphere and goals at large. They delivered and set up the table as well! We will be using them for future engagements and encourage you to do the same!
