Totally at home in a prominent corner of the McDonough town square, Story on the Square epitomizes the enduring magic of the independent bookstore. Stepping into this literary wonderland my first time, over two years ago, I was surprised at its cozy atmosphere and the fact that, in addition to an impressive collection of books that caters to diverse literary tastes, it offers a superb little bar area toward the back; this doubles as a wonderful place to carry on a quiet discussion throughout the day, or to enjoy a variety of local regulars in the evenings, particularly as a given weekend approaches.

Read moreI had the pleasure of visiting story on the square for the first time Sunday October 10th. It is a lovely and charming bookstore. I’m not sure how I felt like I was stepping onto the set of You’ve Got Mail while also feeling like I was spending the day in Stars Hollow, but all the same that’s the only way I could explain it to someone else.
Joy was incredibly helpful. She made me feel at ease and even put a book on order that I had been searching for. The selection is full of familiar favorites and mainstream picks, but I also made a list of more niche novels and nonfiction for next time I visit (they also ship thank god). I’m a librarian, so for a bookstore to have a tote bag full of books I can’t live without is a high compliment. Story on the Square was a detour on a day trip, but I will do my best to be a regular and make a special trip to McDonough whenever I can. It’s hard to explain, but the place is magic.
Oh! And ask joy for a coffee...
Read moreEvery downtown district needs an independent, corner bookstore, and Story on the Square is a business that has become so important to the vibrancy of the McDonough Square. It's truly made our city so much more special. Story on the Square isn't 'just' a bookstore, though: it's also a coffee and wine/craft beer/charcuterie bar (cleverly called Rough Draft), a special event space, and a gift store. Most importanly it has become a haven for local creativity and thoughtful discussions, where you can find the young and old gathering for author readings, book clubs, cooking clubs, games/trivia, wine tastings and fun holiday socials. It's a place to meet people who are different from you or who think another way and have real conversations with them. The buildng is also absolutely gorgeous! You just feel good being there. Thank you to Story on the Square for being a catalyst for the revitalization of...
