Minneapolis City Hall — Local services in Minneapolis

City Hall is one of the buildings that participates in Doors Open Minneapolis. They let you explore the 1st floor, the courtyard on the 2nd floor and the 3rd floor where the Mayor's office is located. Security is polite.

I went on a Sunday and thought it was cool how Mayor Frey was still in his office giving tours and educating folks on the role of a Mayor.

The building feels like they spent 80% of the budget on the entrance and outer facade and then cobbled together the rest. Apparently all the rose marble was sourced from Minnesota on specialized horse drawn carriages and sculpted onsite. It feels grand when you walk in but once you take the stairs up, it feels like walking backwards in time. The courtyard wasn't maintained and the whole building kinda looked rundown. I mean, I get governments need to be efficient, but I'm kinda embarassed that this building is supposed to...

Minneapolis city council..please make up your mind about the 3rd pct soon!!! I don't care which side you are on. Everybody agrees on the need for public safety, and that includes a police station within the service area.

Staff it with those officers that are deemed to be the kind of people that believe in the need for responsible and community minded public safety, but stop this indecisiveness, or else you will just be a part of the ongoing problem.

Beautiful, historic, over 130-year-old Minneapolis City Hall is a place open to public, where you are welcome and where you should go and visit, whether you are a one-day tourist/visitor in the city or a native Minnesotan. You ask for a "Self-guided tour" brochure at an info desk and go around the magnificent building, getting to know its history and the present role as seat of the city authorities as well as some county offices like the Sheriff's department. Check the wonderful Rotunda with the huge marble sculpture of "Mississippi - the Father of Waters" and tiny "mischievous faces" by the elevators on ground floor.
