As part of the Emery Hotel space, this location is the polar opposite of the grungy original Whittier location which opened in 2000. Great atmosphere with plenty of wood, faux marble, plants, and a bookshelf with old timey world globes and books. A bit standoffy service, particularly if you ask about prices, although not as bad as the Whittier location at 25th and Nicollet where patronization is considered a feature. The $3.50 posted price for coffee (about $4.00 with double digit downtown Minneapolis tax) is for a tiny cup which appears smaller then an 8 ounce Starbucks short, although when I asked about it they claimed it was 10. They should have the posted price for a reasonable size. They are only open till 5:00, but you can get away with hanging out longer as the area appears part of the hotel, basically a 24 hour guest lounge. They do have issues with indigents coming in and harassing civilians or sleeping like all downtown service businesses as this is so tolerated now with today's politics. It's not nearly as bad though as it was at the Marquette and 5th Street Starbucks a block away which had to close precovid because of random assaults to customers and staff by thugs off the streets (myself included). This shop is open, though with limited hours, on holidays which is handy. Incredibly there is no value rating here, that would have been...
Read moreI recently visited Spyhouse Coffee Roasters in Minneapolis and had a delightful experience with Queen of hearts and pistachio and rose latte. The ambiance of the cafe is perfect for both social gatherings and solo visits, where you need some quiet time to work or read. The interior boasts a stylish yet cozy décor, which makes it a comfortable spot to linger over a cup of coffee.
The coffee itself is exceptional. I tried their signature blend, and it was rich, smooth, and perfectly brewed. They clearly use high-quality beans, and the baristas are skilled, paying close attention to the details of coffee making. Besides coffee, they offer a variety of pastries and snacks, which seem to be well-liked, although I didn’t try any during my visit.
Service at Spyhouse was efficient and friendly. The staff was knowledgeable and eager to share recommendations when asked. The place can get quite busy, especially on weekends, but the vibe remains relaxed and welcoming.
Overall, Spyhouse Coffee Roasters stands out not just for its excellent coffee but also for the overall experience it offers. It's definitely a go-to spot for anyone looking to enjoy a great cup of coffee in a charming setting in...
Read moreSpy House, you did it again! This was my first visit to the downtown Spy House. Considering the location, it was rather calm & quiet. However, the same can be said for the rest of downtown in light of the ongoing pandemic. Regardless, this location is an excellent place to work, study, or simply relax. The overall atmosphere is eclectically rustic with post-modern flair; something typical of any experience at Spy House.
The Greco-Roman pillars add unique character combined with a fire place in the middle of the seating area. Not meaning to sound facetious, but the built in bookshelves near the barista counter are missing an antique typewriter or two!
I look forward to making this location my new downtown go to coffee shop!
Sidenote:
It is always a plus whenever the wife enjoys the location as...
