Mattress shopping is a long and tedious process and my husband and I have different preferences. We had a duxianna brand which was marketed at the time (20 years ago) to last a “lifetime”. Our bodies have changed a lot, however, plus we wanted the adjustable mattresses in order to read and watch tv more comfortable as well as alleviate pressure on my knees and his upper back joints.

Our research began 6 months ago while we were visiting relatives in Scottsdale (2 showrooms) and Ann Arbor (1 showroom). We learned a lot about what we didn’t want and ignored Consumer Reports charts which are geared to the masses and include “box mattress” options which would not be good enough for the rest of our lives (we are late60’s/early 70’s). We also excluded the highly rated Sleep Number mattresses because of it’s history of mechanical issues.

We found that Mattress Nation (on Lighthouse, New Monterey) had many highly rated brands including our favorite, Tempur-Pedic, so we made an appt and had an “initial” meeting with Adam, a knowledgeable sales associate but there were a few interruptions by other clients and we made a subsequent appt with Mike Tran, co-owner. Mike is everything you could hope for: knowledgeable but not pedantic, consultative but not pushy, empathic and sincere and very patient. He met us 2 other times and we chose Tempurpedic split Cal-kings (contour breeze for my husband and cloud-breeze for me). My wife and I were looking for a Cal King mattress and box spring. I had looked at reviews online of various mattress stores and decided to make a visit to Mattress Nation in Monterey. When I arrived, I was greeted by Tom. I gave Tom a description of what my wife and I were looking for. We were not interested in a memory foam mattress and we wanted a mattress that was firm. Tom is an excellent sales associate. I immediately got a good vibe from Tom. He seemed very honest and informative. Tom took his time to answer any and all questions that I had. He never made me feel rushed. In fact, Tom suggested that I spend at least 20 minutes or so on each of the mattresses that were of interest to me. I was able to narrow it down to choosing between two mattresses. Tom never tried to up-sell me on anything. He went out of his way to make sure that I was comfortable with my purchase. They were even able to deliver the mattress the next day! Devin, the delivery person, called me about a half hour before arriving. When he arrived with his partner, I showed him the pathway upstairs. It is kinda a tricky angle but Devin and his partner did a great job of removing our old and bringing in the new. There are lots of mattress stores, selling mostly the same brands. We were fortunate to have a recommendation from a family member for Mattress Nation so we started there. Farid at the Sand City store was extremely helpful. He discussed what features we were seeking, what type of sleepers we were (side, back, etc.), and systematically showed us how various manufacturers addressed our issues. Instead of a hard sell, it was a thoughtful approach to finding the right mattress for us. Once we decided on our mattress, Farid then searched for every advantage he could find for us. For example, the Manufacturer's webpage offered 36 month interest free financing but Farid found a way to offer 48 month interest free financing. He also arranged prompt delivery, which was accomplished quickly and efficiently.
