Murray's Toggery Shop — Local services in Nantucket

This is my first trip to Nantucket, and Murray’s was one of my “have to go!” destinations as a lover of clothes.

It’s hard to express my disappointment at my experience there. I expected, having worked at upscale haberdasheries while in college, that this would be a great experience. While the clothes are of excellent quality, the staff is not. It felt as though their attitude was like “aren’t you lucky to be here?”

Yesterday, my wife and I wandered in close to closing time, unbeknownst to us. One of the staff was “kind” enough to let us know they were closing in 5 minutes. The stores where I worked would never have been so rude and would have stayed as long as required to make a customer happy. (I know being polite is not just a southern thing because we have met many gracious and kind people working on this ideallic island.) But, to be polite, we said we’d come back tomorrow. We come back. Not a single person in the store spoke to me nor my wife. Not one. I’m thinking, “nice clothes, but most of these brands I can buy at home or on line.” I was ready to drop a pretty penny. Instead, I bought a visor and a cap.

I visited the store and I loved all the clothing they have. Beautiful window display, very classy, and great selection of colors and style. I was looking for a nice stripe sweater in small size, they didn't have it at the store,but one of the owners Michael offered to go to the other store to get me the Small size. I have ordered clothing from Murray's and it arrived in a timely fashion, looked like it does online, tailored easily (get your slacks unfinished and have your local seamstress to hem them for that exact length), and wear beautifully. I ordered a belt for a gift, which did not fit, and when I sent it back, they were very pleasant to work with. My one regret is that their summer madras ties are over-the-top expensive.
