I measured myself and bought an off-rack suit from Macy's online sale. It needed... Considerable adjustment. I needed it fixed asap for a wedding, so I searched and rang a couple different tailors in New Haven and decided on Greg's Tailor Shop & Formals.
I dropped in and Greg himself saw me right away. He had me try the suit on, spun me around and marked some spots with chalk in less than a hyperbolic minute. I was skeptical about how quickly he had assessed my very poorly fitting suit but he assuaged my doubts with some friendly conversation, while patiently answering my suit 101 questions. (When I asked how I was supposed to power-fist-bump-dance at my friend's wedding when the shoulders in the jacket were preventing me from raising my arms high enough, he explained that suit jackets weren't necessarily designed for power-fist-bump-dancing and recommended I simply remove the jacket lol)
I picked my suit up about a week later and was blown away by how much better it fit. To reiterate: it was a self measured, off the rack online purchase. After Greg worked his magic the suit fit and looked like a [fancy brand] suit.
Greg threw in a pair of socks and a suit bag. I am quite lucky to have found such an affordable and professional tailor in New Haven. I cannot remember the exact cost but I believe I paid around $80 for a rush order on a three piece suit. (Greg please kindly correct me if this number is too high and tactfully ignore if it's too low haha)
Greg is the friendly owner of this humble shop, and mentioned how important reviews are for his business. He wore a mask the entire time but he is a gentleman that smiles warmly through his eyes and demeanor. I genuinely encourage anyone in the New England area to consider Greg for your tailoring/formal wear needs. I wish I could write better, but I've been practicing less and spending more time strutting around in my well-fitting suit š
PS: I returned after the wedding because my power-fist-bump-dancing had torn the shoulder in my dress shirt. Greg remembered me immediately, repaired it the same afternoon, and didn't charge me anything. He took some cash after I insisted, but I was blown away by this level of service (especially for a shirt he hadn't initially worked on). For the first time in my life I feel like a man in a $6k dollar suit with a personal tailor, which has been a very nice...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreTL;DR: Go here for anything you need. Greg is amazing and will take care of you, even if you have limited experience with tailors or donāt know exactly what you want. Prices are more than reasonable.
I had to get some measurements taken for an upcoming wedding, so I walked into Gregās shop without an appointment, just because it was the closest on Google Maps. Despite having several other customers in the shop, he patiently measured me for free. I enjoyed the experience so much, that I asked him to make a tuxedo for me. I had been putting off buying a tuxedo for years, because I wanted to feel confident and comfortable in the process of making something I would cherish for a long time.
Because I donāt go to tailors often, I was a bit nervous about the whole thing at the beginning, but Gregās warmth created an atmosphere that encouraged the full expression of my preferences. I came to realize that Greg can do anythingāhis primary aim is to make his customers happy, so it didnāt make sense for me to not mention something and pay for a garment that I wasnāt completely satisfied with. While some tailors might get annoyed at you for asking them to take another day to make an additional adjustment you didnāt know you needed, Greg will gladly do whatever you think will make you look your best, and then undo it if you change your mind.
Greg mentioned to me that he got a few negative reviews a few months ago, which ruined a five-star rating he was very proud of. He said most of these reviews came from the same few people who were disgruntled, not at the quality of his work, but simply because Greg declined to accommodate their expedited requests due to him reaching his personal capacity. To me, this is just another sign of Gregās excellence, and but for the numerical demarcation of his review star-age, should only strengthen your confidence in him. He values the commitments he makes to his customers, wonāt promise anything he canāt deliver, is in high demand, and wonāt sacrifice quality to meet an unrealistic deadline. He might be able to do something for you same-day, but if heās too busy, heāll let you know, and you should understand.
Greg takes great pride in his work and his family. Donāt be surprised if his kids are running around. He knows everyone in New Haven and has been dressing the best for decades. Iām happy to call him...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI've called 5 different times to make an appointment to get a bridesmaids dress hemmed for a wedding in August. The first two times I called in June they said it was too early and wouldn't book me for an appointment and just told me to call back. I called on Monday and asked if I could bring it in this week. He told me that Thursday would work (he literally said there's plenty of time) but didn't officially book me for an appointment. I called Thursday morning and he said that it's way too late and they don't have time. He has been stringing me along for 6 weeks and now says he can't do the job that he assured me would be no problem. If he had told me there was an issue early on I could've made an appointment somewhere else. This is so highly unprofessional, I can't believe a business would treat customers like this. It is...
