No MTA workers are around to fix gummed up MetroCard machines when you need them, typically on the uptown side.
On the downtown side there are fewer issues. If you have an out-of-town friend planning to use this station you need to warn them about the two levels for the E and the C. It's absurd how we hang out by the stairs to the downtown E because everyone knows it goes to the same stops as the downtown C well to a point. So naturally people crowd around the top of the stairs to take whichever train arrives first.
