I recently had an experience at Alterations Specialists SoHo that left me with mixed feelings. While the quality of their work was commendable and the turnaround time was acceptable, my overall experience was tarnished by exorbitant pricing and manipulative tactics that left me feeling taken advantage of.

The alterations on my bridesmaid's dress were executed skillfully, and I must acknowledge the proficiency of their tailoring team. However, the issue arose when it came to pricing and communication. Initially, I was quoted a reasonable price, but to my dismay, the final bill amounted to an eye-watering $900, more than double the cost of the dress itself.

Throughout the process, I felt manipulated into spending more money than I had anticipated. They assured me that additional hemming was included in the original quote, but during my second fitting, they suddenly changed their stance and requested an additional $125, giving me a vague reasoning for the sudden additional cost that made no sense to myself or to the Bride who had come with me to the fitting. This sudden demand caught me off guard, and I felt coerced into agreeing since they had already pinned the hem after being told I should "just do it since it's already pinned."

What was particularly disheartening was their attempt to use a discount as leverage to secure a positive review. They urged me to leave a review in exchange for a discount, seemingly attempting to mask their excessive charges with this "incentive." I felt pressured and uncomfortable, as though my feedback was being bought rather than earned through quality service.

Despite the favorable outcome of the alterations and the relatively quick turnaround time, I cannot overlook the overall experience. I should have been treated with transparency and fairness from the beginning, but instead, I was left feeling like a mere source of profit.

In conclusion, while Alterations Specialists SoHo may possess skilled tailors, the exorbitant pricing and manipulative tactics used in my case make it difficult for me to recommend their services. If you decide to use their services, I advise you to clarify all pricing details upfront and stand your ground to avoid falling victim to their manipulative practices. Overall, I was disappointed with my experience here. I took two dresses here to be altered and frankly, neither job was done correctly. The result of my appointment here were two dresses that were unwearable. Save yourself a few hundred dollars and go to the dry cleaner tailor in your neighborhood.

I tried to talk to the business about my experience and they were SO rude on the phone. Probably the worst customer service I have ever experienced. They wouldn't let me talk to anyone higher up than their front desk receptionist who adamantly told me it was my fault for not trying the dresses on in store. I honestly wasn't even looking for a refund, an apology would have even been nice. Those were definitely not offered and when the receptionist said he'd set me up with someone higher up, I never heard back.

Here's what happened to me:

I brought in 2 dresses in for weddings to get altered. I was looking for a job well done and something I could count on looking great for the two weddings I was in this summer. My first dress fit perfectly, it was just extremely long. The man who measured my dress was extremely adamant that I wear heels with the dress. The wedding was on a golf course and heels were prohibited, I tried to explain this but he kept telling me to wear heels with the dress. I made it clear I had to wear flats because the event was on a golf course (also, why was it so important to him that I wear heels anyways?) I picked up my dresses in a hurry and to be fair, against their advise, I didn't try them on in store. (I mean..I just paid $400 for the alterations and it was, what I thought, a very simple fix! what could go wrong?)

I got to the event day and my dress was SO long. He apparently cut the dress, but not nearly enough for me to wear flats and look presentable....had I worn heels, the dress would have fit perfectly...so upsetting.

The second dress I got altered was taken in and cups were put in the dress. With the cups in the dress, it was WAY too tight...like so tight that when I zipped it up, the front seams popped out and broke. I had to tape the dress to my chest for the rest of the wedding. I threw away the dress as soon as the wedding ended.

This place is phony and elitist. Wouldn't go here again if...

Best decision ever for my wedding dress (and more)!! Alteration specialists, and in particular Humberto, made my wedding dress look like absolute perfection. It is worth the money to have your dress done here. I’m way overdue in sharing my praise for how they worked with me, I was married nearly a year ago. I bought my semi custom gown in Australia from a “leading designer”, it was delicate beaded fabric, covered in detailed appliqués- and I had a terrible experience at every fitting there in Aus and it scarred me. I flew back to the US with a 75% done(100% paid), ill fitting dress. However, Humberto at alteration specialists patiently and expertly worked through all the details of my dress, from overall tailoring, to a perfect hem, a bustle (that the original designer said “couldn’t be done”) and redoing the neckline (in one fitting) that the original designer also couldn’t get right after many fittings. I could go on and on for how amazing this experience was. I went to my first appt full of anxiety after all my fittings in Australia were a disaster- from my first appt with Humberto my dress fittings were basically the only part of wedding planning I looked forward to. I couldn’t believe the care and patience he had as every appt he further transformed my dress into my dream dress I knew it could be. I’m forever grateful to Humberto and the team (Liam!) for how they treated me and how my dress turned out. I also had two other gowns done here, my wedding after party dress, and my wedding happy hour pants done here - all perfection. Bring your clothes here - ESPECIALLY your wedding gown and outfits.
