Celebrate BK at the bandshell is all they have left for me and that is not always great (Though this year seems to be more interesting than the last few). I am a visual artist who lives in BK and I took all my stuff off of their site. I have truly had it with their attitude. The visual art program is geared to families and workshops and usually have be able to be tied into music or theater. It is not and and cannot be considered a truly serious visual art program. I'm sure it's why shows here never get reviewed in serious media, while the preceding venue, Rotunda Gallery, did get reviewed and usually had very good shows. The shows coming out of the registry are too clearly pointed at a specific demographic. Nobody else has a chance. They even advertise for artists from certain neighborhoods, while totally ignoring the artists already in their registry. So only CERTAIN Brooklyn artists need apply. I attempted to tour their media lab at the grand opening of the BRIChouse and was turned away. I was also blocked from entering the ballroom. Other visits there were equally weird, leaving me no alternative but to believe that the mostly white staff HATES white people older than 40. But I bet they would grab my money in a heartbeat. Once, I won a drawing for a coupon there and when I rose from the audience to collect it, you should have seen the BRIC employee's face. Nobody needs that and I certainly...
Read moreI went to BRIC 1x day before show date to purchase tix's at a cheaper rice ( Per BRIC website ). I was told that it was sold out to come the next day and see if anyone cancels or no show and then I can purchase those tickets. The next day since there were no cancellations they said that we can sit in the front on cushions. I really thought that it was cushion stools, NO they were just seat cushions and it was on the hard floor. I was charged FULL price to sit on the GROUND. I should have been offered discount prices at least because I came the day before trying to purchase discount tickets. I was very disappointed, disrespected & humiliated. There were other people who also were on the waiting list that came the same night after me & they were sitting in a chair NT the ground like me & my children. The ONLY reason that I bought the tickets and attended the show was because my daughter needed to see the show to write a paper for her class on Monday. I will NEVER attend another show there...
