I had a great experience today at Salon 718! I've been to their Prospect Heights and Clinton Hill locations for blowouts in the past but never for color. I heard that Sunshine was an awesome colorist so I booked an appointment with her at their Fort Greene location based on what worked for my schedule. I was greeted immediately after walking in and offered a beverage which was a nice touch. Shortly after I sat in Sunshine's chair and she asked me about my hair history (the colors I've had in the past, last time my hair was colored, etc.) She explained that knowing the backstory will help her get a better understanding of the chemicals that have touched my hair and how to craft a formula specific to my hair needs. No stylist has ever asked me such detailed questions before which made me feel like I was in great hands! I ended up having a single process with partial low-lights to help create dimension. The color application was so quick and the dye she used did not have that awful chemical smell that I've experienced in the past. Alex washed my hair and she and Sunshine talked to me about the benefits of having a treatment. Since I have long hair and do not like to cut it often, they suggested a Kerastase treatment which was a $35 upcharge but definitely worth the money. I've had one in the past and not only does it smell so good but it makes your hair feel so silky smooth. Knowing I was sensitive to cutting my long hair Sunshine did not pressure me into cutting but blew out my hair and then showed me how my ends were pretty thin so I trusted her to give me a trim and I couldn't be happier. My color looks fabulous and my hair certainly looks so much thicker and healthier after the cut. I'd consider myself a moderately picky person and Salon 718 definitely exceeded my expectations. Beautiful salon, friendly staff that listen and take great care of their clients! Thank you Sunshine and...
Read moreI really wanted to like this place, I really did - it's in an easy to get to location. However, this is not a salon for 2PB, Black women.
Salon 718 is one of those white centric salons that throw a few Black stylists (my stylist was Tiffani) on the roster to make it seem like they cater to a diverse clientele - trust me they do not. So much so that as I was getting a common style several Black women wear, the process drew a crowd and a bunch of questions from the staff there.
First of all eww. I'm a human being getting a service done, I'd like not to have a crowd gather like some circus act. And second, the style wasn't even done the way I liked or asked for after I provided a picture. I left the salon with an ugly, unflattering hairstyle that I had to get gawked at during it's completion.
They also only wash your hair twice. Twice, yall. And one of them is very dainty "wash" where they barely get in there. I left the salon with my scalp still very itchy. What works for white hair DOES NOT work for Black hair and this universal approach aka one size fits all is extremely flawed!
And the "deep condition" isn't even done under a steamer. It's done with a halo dryer. Oh dear! A complete flop and bust anyway you look at it.
The salon is also very cramped. I was expecting a spacious, luxurious design - not at this location, so tiny inside. They are also slow to clean up the trays where they mix the color. I walked in and there were three bowls on a tray waiting to be cleared and two more by the mixing sink.
I'd never return and for my unambiguously Black women looking for a great salon with a great experience you'll enjoy? Avoid this place like the plague - it...
Read moreBased off my experience at this establishment I am extremely dissatisfied with the service I received. When I initially reserved an appointment at this salon (dekalb location) was originally under the impression it was going to be a full service session . Unfortunately that was not the case with this booking. I was told via text message 24hours before my hair appointment to arrive with my hair already styled . I was receiving a curly hair cut and fully aware that a dry hair cut provides the best results for my hair texture . I was under the impression that after the dry cut my hair would be restyled with product distributed evenly throughout my hair .The premise of my concern mainly involves the stylist also attending to another client which I believe conflicted with my service . After the cut the stylist applied product so scarcely that it couldnât even be classified as damped . Once my hair was âstyledâ I was place under the hair dryer for 10 minutes . After being under the dryer and my hair being âstyledâ I was in utter disbelief in the state my hair was in . My hair was severely dry and frizzy . My hair was not in that state before my appointment . I had very high hopes and expectations of what I was going to receive mainly due to the work that has been posted via instagram and being personally recommended to entrust this establishment with my hair. Viewing the photos and videos on the instagram profile of this hair salon , the other clients with curly hair have received a completely different experience that than what I endured during my appointment. It is utterly...
