My 8yo daughter did 2 weeks of camp this summer and had a genuinely magical time. Led by a counselor, the kids form a band, name it, write and practice an original song and perform it on the last day of camp. All the staff here are absolutely wonderful and dedicated to creating a nurturing environment where the kids can explore and express their own ideas while having good guidance and support.
As a bit of backstory, I'm someone who started regimented piano lessons very young and then joined student band and choir in middle school, but never enjoyed the structure of traditional music education. I pushed away from that as I got older to explore music on my own terms in my own way, eventually playing in bands for many years. In my opinion, the approach BMF takes in balancing learning with exploration and creativity will create a lifelong love of music on each student's individual terms. I've seen a real impact on my daughter who has gone from not knowing what a kick drum is to writing and performing her own drum parts, creating fliers for her band, and demonstrating a real talent for lyrics! Most importantly, she's loved the experience and it's deepened her passion for music and her confidence in self-expression.
Can't recommend highly enough. BMF has really created something special and we've already signed up for...
Read moreMy son, recently turned 7 years old, has been attending summer camp and day camp at Brooklyn Music Factory since year ago and we are so grateful for BMF and its teachers. What a magical, wonderful place for music and creativity! Our son has LOVED the song writing camps - the kids, in small groups, write a song together over the course of the day and perform as a band at the end of the day⌠on a STAGE, and have access to real instruments like an electric guitar and drums, in addition to keyboards and microphones. What a COOL set up. The space is beautiful, and the teachers engaged, patient and loving. Our son is thrilled to go to camp there, and has been happy to even without knowing another child going. He has always come out having made new friends and very happy, asking when he can go next. He just started private vocal lessons today with Mike Gebhart and our son is SO THRILLED. As parents we appreciate the detailed report (videos, links to exercises they did together)⌠BMF is an oasis and we recommend it to any kid with a performative or musical spirit⌠or even shy kids who secretly or quietly love music and performance, as our neighborâs kid went with our son recently - they are friends but the other child is as nervous but LOVED it. As a mom I feel safe and secure and happy dropping off my child at...
Read moreHighly recommended for day camps, summer camp, and music lessons. The staff and teachers are beyond nice and supportive. My kids went to summer camp for 4 weeks there and they LOVED it. They now write their own songs at home, it's so sweet!
Music lessons can be in person (group or private) or remote (private only, as far as I know). The teachers really know how to get kids comfortable learning new skills, working with each other as fellow musicians, and performing in front of an audience.
During summer camp they performed weekly and I loved those shows. The regular classes also perform for a wider audience a couple of times a year. At BMF, kids learn to compose their own songs, and it has been so neat to see my kids develop that creative outlet. We still sing some of those songs at home :)
As an adult, I've also taken advantage of private music lessons for myself. Between my kids and I, we have probably taken lessons or at least met most people involved with BMF and each one of them is so lovely to work with â¤ď¸ Shout-out to Sara, Peira, Randa, Will, Benny, Ben, Jerry, John, Elora, Jerry, Christina, Greg, and everyone on the team even if I missed your name...
