I donāt typically write reviews but I had to express my disappointment. Iām old enough to remember the glory days of this store, and I understand it has changed hands but⦠this place is a husk of its former self. Iāve been in here a handful of times in the past couple of months and just have to share my experience. They have come in clutch for a couple of items Iāve needed, but their stock is extremely limited. Hardly any makeup, no props⦠They do have nice quality items here and there but for the most part a lot of their stock seems cheaply made and over priced in my opinion, even for Manhattan. Lots of dollar store quality toys that look like theyāve been sitting around for ages, costumes that havenāt been relevant for 20 years or so.
The helpfulness of the employees is entirely dependent on which employee you get to assist you. The girl with the curly hair who Iāve seen in the middle of the store is completely useless, sorry to say. It took me several minutes to even realize she worked there, because she was sitting on the bench in the middle of the store with her headphones in and was scrolling on her phone. She seemed lost on any of my referencesāwhich, maybe Iām a jerk but why would you work in a costume shop if you donāt know anything about horror movies, pop-culture icons, or Broadway shows? Why hire someone like this? The girl at the front of the shop (kinda gothy, with black hair) is much more helpful. She gave me some great makeup tips and pointed me in the directions of other local businesses she thought might have the items I was looking for. Thereās a guy who dresses like a pirateāI think he said his name is Teachāwho is also very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful! Same thing with being able to send me places he thought would have what I needed, and had some great restaurant and bar recommendations too lol!
But there was one other person of note, who, I am now seeing from previous reviews must be one of the managers. I noticed him, in all black, kind of weaving around the store, and smelled strongly of alcohol when he passed me. I was also kind of wondering if he was following me, and Iām seeing now that I am not the only person to experience this. This makes me concerned, and not exactly want to return, especially given their limited inventory. Itās sad because the place has such a legacy in New York City. I hope they can turn...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI usually am not one to write reviews, but I am so disgusted by some (not all) of the staff here I just needed to say something, to make sure one one else visits this place again. I am a former New Yorker and have been coming to Halloween adventure for over 20 years, I remember how amazing it use to be in the past. I was back visiting family and had to come see the store again. I truly wish I had not. It is a mockery and a perversion of its old glory, not only are all the once high quality items replaced with cheap bootleg costumes and dollar store toys (all still much more expensive then they should be), I had an awful experience with a man i was shocked to find out was the manager. The so called āmanagerā (who I later found out was named Vive) stalked me around the store and made me feel generally very unsafe and uncomfortable as a woman who was all alone. When I asked him why he was following me, he just mumbled some nonsense I couldnāt understand. I wouldnāt be surprised if it was because he was drunk as he also smelled strongly of alcohol. I understand needing to watch the merchandise but he was so close to me at some points I could swear I felt his breath on my neck. It was beyond inappropriate. As I mentioned before, when I told him I wanted to speak to speak to the manager, he claimed to be the only manager there. I honestly didnāt believe him and decided to go ask the girl at the register to speak to the manager instead. Unlike Vive, the desk employee, Cat, was very kind and polite, and even apologized profusely for how I was treated, but she did confirm that the man was the floor manager, but not the store manager, who was unfortunately not there that day. When I spoke to Cat it seemed like I was not the first person complaining about this manager, and I even saw a recent review only a few weeks ago complaining about the same person!
It deeply pains me to see this store has fallen so far, but the few employees I met that were kind did give me a bit of hope that the store did have some kind presence, I only hope the store manager will take this seriously and fire this disgusting man and somehow return to how...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreHorrible store. 11/26/17 6:40ish The workers donāt know the mask they have in the store. I ask for how much the Krampus mask is the girls like what what. Then she calls for help on the walkie because the mask is way up in the air and I hear the Man say loud and clear ātell the idiot customer that the price is on the masksā and she tells him the mask is way to high to reach thatās why sheās asking him. The man give a whole reason that his behind the make up counter and other reasons why he doesnāt want to come. Then he finally comes and doesnāt know which one is the Krampus mask. Pointing up at it he is still asks me which one. I say that one then he says we have two ones and he points to one in the opposite direction. Then I say not that one that one. Then he says i got to get a ladder my mom and I walk with him as he explains to us it is not him it is her. We thought he was talking about it was the girls fault that walkie talkied him and I said no it was your fault we heard you over the walkie talkie and you didnāt want to come help her. Then he said her and I said not her him telling him it was his fault. The he says itās Vivianās fault and I said not her him you your fault and he said no Vivianās fault and I said you. Then he said we do not say he we say Vivian and i said you? Your names Vivian and he said yes. I asked again thinking he was joking and he said yes.As he carried the ladder to get the mask. I said your a he and he said we do not say he we say Vivian. I said god sent you down a man and he walked away with the ladder and asked someone else to help me at that point I told the next person forget it itās more trouble then itās worth. This man was the dark skinned black guy that is employed here that thanks his a woman even though dressed as a man and really didnāt come off to girlly till he tried to tell me his name was Vivian. We looked around and bought the two items I had been looking at earlier because he made me feel like I never want to walk in that...
