Sadly, this gym has become more of a full-time daycare center whose fringe benefit is that they happen to let adults in to exercise around their primary customer: children (and their parents' never-ending finances). This summer 2024 has been atrocious. The Y's day camp has become the sole focus of this branch and there is no way to work out during the day without maneuvering around kids, dealing with their endless screaming, lining them up outside all of the bathrooms, scowls from the camp counselors at gym regulars who are just trying to use the bathroom. If working out for you is at all meditative or where you go to forget about your own family or stressors for an hour, this branch is not for you. My friends, they are louder than your noise canceling headphones. Given that the entire gym shuts down by 9 PM (and laughably 5 PM on weekends), there is never a good time to work out here. I used to describe this facility as one of the best ROI's, for fitness, in the city. It has fallen off sharply. It is no longer worth the...
Read moreI've been an on and off member of the McBurney Y for several years now. I always return to the Y after trying other gyms because McBurney is just a nice place to go. Other gyms have a feel that's too commercial for me, one that's full of bros and juiceheads that I don't need. There's a community atmosphere at McBurney that I really enjoy.
Let's not forget the facilities or equipment. I enjoy the cardio machines, the weight room, weekly spin classes, and the sauna and steam room. I think they have excellent equipment.
Unlike some other reviews here, I've never had bad interactions with the staff. I've found them to be helpful and polite. Given that this is NYC, I have seen a lot of patrons/members who are rude and deal with the staff from a position of self-righteous entitlement. For people who have bad interactions, I'd suggest looking at your own behavior before blaming others. You give and get courtesy, kindness, and respect. It's a 2-way street.
McBurney is a favorite place for an after work and weekend...
Read moreAdministration at this gym has no concern for the people paying a normal top rate. When you ask for simple services, they give you a blank look up. They let kids run this place and act like we are rude for having anxiety with kids acting lawless in the entire facility. Not a peaceful place The staff are the worst part, I was a memeber here for 15 years but the way the kids run this place and bully memebers off the courts and gym equipment is abusive and illegal to people with special needs. This place is bad community of YMCA
Also the heath dept should visit this place especially the showers The that basketball court is dirtier then the street, my fingers are black after playing here for 10 min
Just wanna reiterate how their “staff bullies people” off the equipment they pay for and takes up gym space for their personal use and disrupts the actual members.
Calling better business Bureau
And they will close half the gym...
