I normally hesitate to leave 1 star reviews (or reviews at all tbh) but my most recent experience honestly left me really disappointed. Iâve been going to New Hair since 2021, for color (double process) and cuts. I normally book with the same two stylists, an associate and director, both of whom have been really great! Unfortunately, they werenât available for my most recent appointment, so I booked with a Sr. Stylist, Jeane. (Warning: very long post)
For context, my hair is bleached to a light brown, and Iâve always booked root touch ups. In the past, thereâs never been an issue with me booking this - my previous stylists have always done 1 round of bleach + 1 round of toner to update my roots, then styled my hair after.
When I came in, Jeane sat me down and confirmed we were doing a root touch up today. She confirmed with me that I just wanted my roots done, and I said yes, Iâd like to just match my roots to my hair. She did not say anything else, and proceeded to get to work. When she began, I noticed that she was putting a red color on my roots - that shouldâve been my first red flag, since bleach isnât normally red. I wish I spoke up, but figured hey, sheâs a Sr. Stylist, maybe this is just some new mix (surprise - it was not). After she let it process in my hair, she came back and looked at it, and it was only at that point when she said âyou need bleach if you want it to match your hair.â HUH.
At this point, I start panicking a little - why did she decide to put red in my roots? The rest of my hair isnât even red! What happened to the bleach? This is when I realized there was a disconnect. I told her when I normally do this, my usual stylist bleaches then tones my roots.
At this point, if she had apologized and recognized she made a mistake, and offered to remedy this immediately, I wouldnât be writing this review. Instead, she repeatedly starts to blame me for the situation, saying I âshouldâve told her I needed bleach first.â HUH.
So Iâm completely shocked rn. As a professional, it shouldâve been obvious from the beginning that my roots would need bleach to match the color of my hair. My hair is nearly blonde, and my roots are black! Even if the âroot touch upâ appointment doesnât include bleach (which there should be an option for on the website btw - root touch up w/ bleach), she shouldâve confirmed with me first what I wanted to do before randomly getting to work. She couldâve said âbtw, this appointment doesnât include bleachâ and I couldâve rebooked, or asked me if I wanted to move forward with something else, but instead, we ended up in a situation where my roots were completely misdone and I was gaslit for not micromanaging a professional stylist.
Anyway fast forward, I ended up with a completely different hair color which fortunately doesnât look bad, but I originally came in wanting to keep my same hair color. _ They ended up charging me for double process + color, which is fine since thatâs what I did, but good customer service wouldâve been 1) acknowledging the mistake rather than continuing to blame me throughout the appointment 2) not charging for the full color, since that only happened because of the initial mistake. Itâs not even the fact that I paid full price - Iâve always come in for the same root touch up process, which always runs $400+ with tip, and have been coming here religiously. Itâs the fact that the stylist just never apologized and continued to gaslight me throughout the appointment, even going as far as making a joke about it at the end.
The cherry on top is I also very obviously wear straight bangs - she didnât even bother to style them when she was done! My bangs went MIA lol. My old stylist...
Read moreI went there for my root touch-up color for the first time after hearing positive experiences from my friends. However, I was a bit skeptical and surprised to see so many positive reviews after having my hair done at this place. The stylist (Jeane) did an okay job with my hair color; she matched it as requested. However, the overall experience did not compare favorably to my previous salon visits. During the process, I noticed some hurriedness, as she had another customer waiting, and it seemed we were the last appointments of the day. This didnât really bother me, but the way my hair was handled was a bit rough. Before the treatment, I asked the stylist if I should remove my earrings, and she said it wasnât necessary. I assumed my ears would be covered with plastic earmuffs, but they werenât. Consequently, the dye ended up all over my ears. I had to grab tissues myself to clean it off, as the stylist didnât seem to notice. It wasnât until after the process was complete that she finally provided the plastic earmuffs. I also experienced some itchiness on my scalp. While I understand that some discomfort is expected due to the chemicals, I felt that the application of the dye wasnât very gentle. The dye also ended up on my ears and parts of my forehead and face. While this is somewhat understandable, Iâve had minimal issues with dye application at other salons. When it was time for the hair wash, I was attended to by an assistant. Although she was okay, the experience wasnât the greatest. My face wasnât covered with a facecloth, so water splashed on it, which was manageable. She was supposed to dry my hair, but she was asked to wash another customerâs hair by a senior stylist. The senior stylist, Megan, then helped with drying my hair, but only dried the outer layer, leaving the inner sections still extremely wet. I didnât complain at the time because I was told my stylist would finish up. When my stylist returned, I expected her to complete the drying process, but she only commented that the color looked great and was very hurried to leave. I felt uncomfortable stopping her, but I had to point out that my hair wasnât fully dry. She dried it again after my request but she mentioned that stylists at this salon usually donât dry permed hair thoroughly. While that may be true to some extent, the inner sections/ scalps of the hair should still be properly dried, especially given the chilly weather. Unfortunately, my hair was still damp with minimal blow-drying. Overall, the staff were generally decent, but their handling of the job didnât meet my expectations. Iâve never experienced this with other salons, and I honestly donât think Iâll return. Iâm giving 1 star for the smooth reservation experience and for accommodating a last-minute change to move my appointment 30 minutes earlier than originally scheduled. (Yes, the salon wasnât closing and still taking customer when my...
Read moreAfter years of getting my hair done at home (Connecticut) where the stylists I've been to cannot seem to figure out Asian hair, I decided to make an appointment at a salon with Korean stylists who have more experience with my type of hair. I made a Friday appointment after work which I almost bailed on because it was a particularly long week at work, but I decided to go, and was really happy that I did. My appointment was for a Japanese Straightening treatment.
Ai was my primary stylist, and Dex helped her out to help move the process along because this particular process is LONG (4 hours on hair that falls just below the shoulders). Ai was so meticulous throughout the entire process and paid a lot of attention to detail - she was sweet and very attentive, and ensured that every part of the process was comfortable and enjoyable. Dex is absolutely adorable (not to mention, he had his own client during part of my styling treatment, and her hair came out beautifully). The energy and vibe of the salon is very cool.
Got home that night and my 13 year old daughter said, "Woah. I LOVE it." That's about the highest praise you can get from a teenage girl...
So happy I found this place, and very glad that I didn't bail on my late Friday night...
