Orchard Express Tailor Shop — Local services in New York

tl;dr Good tailoring for basic hem and waist jobs for a reasonable price. Beware getting screwed into paying more than agreed upon. — There’s the good and there’s the bad.

This has been my go-to tailor shop — I’ve been here several times to get dresses and pants hemmed, and I used to recommend this place highly to people. My friends come here to get their pants and practicewear hemmed as well. It’s a great place to go to if you want a quick, well-done hem job for a very affordable price.

This weekend I had an experience that soured my perception of this place — and apparently I’m not alone (according to reviews on Google and Yelp). There’s a bald man at the front desk there that speaks to the rest of the staff in Spanish and speaks disrespectfully. I was quoted $15 for getting the waist of my skirt taken in, and then the bald man spoke to the other seemingly honest man in Spanish and raised the price to $20 — which is a bit more than I expected, but I thought it was okay (the price board quotes $15-20 on similar items), so I confirmed. However, when I come back, the bald man insisted I pay him $30. It was clear he was trying to take advantage of me, from the way he spoke to me condescendingly and kept hiking up the price (despite my attempts to keep things friendly and respectful).

And this has happened to other customers on Google and Yelp, so beware.

To the people running the shop — if you’re going to hike up the price of the job, do it in an honest way. Update the prices on the board if you must, so that numbers aren’t just made up out of thin air (and changed).

The job was done well I have to say, thanks to the tailors — but the integrity of this place (perhaps it’s just that one bald guy at the front desk) is disappointing.

P.S. Seeing this shop respond to critical reviews on Google with “Liar” should tell you a lot… Disappointing because I used to really like this place. Hope the owners...

3 dresses tailored and two items repaired at a really amazing price!! I will definitely be coming back here, I opted to pick them up the next day but they offered same day! I was too shy to check everything over in the store, but I’m just so pleased that I finally mustered the courage to go a tailor because I’ve finally made a dent in the box of clothes I can’t wear for whatever reason! The communication was pretty good, there was one dress that I think I didn’t clarify enough (there was a tiger on the front and back of the dress, and I kept saying not to ‘hurt the tiger’ when making it fit better but I think they thought I was only talking about the front tiger, so the back tiger is now mildly deformed). At first I was bummed because it was a really expensive dress… but also the darts are kind of in the best place they could be to get the fit right, and the job is neat enough that the tiger looks like it was maybe just born a little different, so tbh I think the job they did turned out better than what I would’ve got if they did what I was asking for. The fit is exactly what I wanted it to be. Since I hadn’t actually gone through all the work, I felt too nervous to tip (in case I got home and saw something was really wrong idk) and now I’m pulling my hairs out that that might’ve been really rude!! I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE!! extremely poor/rude service, ruined my dress and did not own up to their actions.

needed to take in my strapless bridesmaids dress and hem it shorter. they took it in way too much to the point where it doesn't fit me anymore. they hemmed the bottom at different lengths so the bottom of the dress is uneven and all lopsided. they were very sloppy and very careless with my dress, leaving random sewing machine track marks all over it.

i went in to explain what happened and expected a refund on my tailor and payment of my now damaged dress. they said they can give me a refund for the tailor (they asked me how much i paid for it so they just make up arbitrary numbers) or they could try to fix it (i already went to a different tailor and they said they didn't leave enough give to let it out, so it was not fixable). they also said they will not be paying for the damaged dress. i was upset that they wouldn't pay for something they damaged.. and then some guy said i could take them to small claims court if i wanted to. i was like huh?? this is how you treat your customers?? i didn't think i was asking for anything crazy since THEY damaged my dress.
