Steinway Hall — Local services in New York

I was skeptical at first, I really thought they would hot sell the more expensive pianos or have some sales tactics for inexperienced new students. I had so many questions because of the research I did prior to our appointments which already stressed me out. My entire appointment lasted about an hour and I went back before making my purchase just to confirm I made the right decision. Yahan Liu made it very simple and she took her time, she was patient and answered my questions in simple terms with repeated demonstrations. Beautiful pianos and exceptional service.

Update: 4/3/24 I was delivered a used, damaged piano not the brand new piano I purchased so I made a few notes in hope that this can help others with issues on their Steinway piano: If you have the funds, never finance the piano. I'd definitely charge the piano on a cc preferably Amex. When the piano is delivered, play ALL the keys and make sure they sound ok. The mover left the accessories box inside my piano and for weeks I couldn't play that note. You will not be able to open the piano yourself to remove the box (see photos and video) check the black keys for scratch marks, those are nail scratches. that's how you can distinguish a used piano and brand new piano(see photos). check the key hole. if the metal plate has a different color or rust inside the hole and fingerprints that's not yours may also indicate it's been locked numerous times previously (see photos) Contact Steinway immediately and ask for PETER to come and finish your piano. He's a good man extremely knowledgeable. He only cares about how your piano looks and sounds with zero agenda. He will tell you in details how to care for the piano. the brand new piano I bought was actually the piano in the show room. people can play it as much as they want prior to the delivery. Steinway tuned it before the delivery and scratched the outside (see photo) so depending on how long it takes them to sell that's how long it's been played.

I've made comparison with the same piano in my school, gotten second opinions and no one believed this is a brand new piano. I don't think race gender and demographic are factors of these events, but it sure feels that way. I've met the most wonderful people from Steinway like Yahan and Peter and I hope they do well. But do not treat people like idiots, if you've delivered a damaged, used piano and you send someone to do the repairs it's refurbished not brand new. Dan Miceli/director said I should've noticed the flaws prior to my purchase and insisted that this is a brand new piano. In Chinese we call this situation "don't let one rat fecal matter destroys the entire bowl of congee" I'm still hopeful that they will make this right by me. If you're happy with your piano I'm happy for you but for those who have issues, I hope you find my review helpful or at least bring some relief to your stress.

Update 7/12/24 YaHan Liu from Steinway & Son is exceptional. She has endured me for 3 months and never gave up on trying to fix my issue. I have been the most obnoxious and difficult customer since the piano was delivered. I have never seen this kind of service anywhere. If you’re buying a piano from Steinway and Son, YaHan Liu is who you want. She will do her utmost diligence and she won’t give up until you’re 100% satisfied. YaHan, My deepest apology for acting the way I did. Thank you for replacing my piano and making all the arrangements. Shout out to Ms. Selene Quiroga, who welcomed us warmly the moment we entered the store. As tourists visiting NYC for a short trip, we stumbled upon the Steinway store after getting lost near Times Square. Owning a grand piano has always been a dream of ours, but we never imagined we'd end up with a piece from Steinway.

Selene's passion and pride for the Steinway brand convinced us of the Spirio series. Being fans of pianists like Yuja Wang and others, the idea of having their performances reflected on our piano at home was incredible. Additionally, Steinway has converted many master performances from black-and-white films to real life, allowing us to hear live performances from the past.

I won’t delve too deeply into how fantastic our experience was. We are a humble couple who often get overlooked in many stores, and neither of us is a professional pianist. Despite this, we were welcomed and introduced to many pianos. Understandably, it's impossible for them to allow anyone to touch their pianos without approval. Imagine coming in with hands that just let go of street tacos— I wouldn’t let any random one to touch my piano at home either. So please, be kind to the staff and ask if you can try some of the pianos, if it's possible.

No Cartier store allows people to freely handle their jewelry. Similarly, treat this store as a small museum or gallery; even without touching anything, the trip is worth it. We didn’t technically touch anything out of respect for the masterpieces, and they were kind enough to give us the confidence to make a purchase and rely on their exceptional customer service.

This place is not for really seeing what a wonderful piano sounds like. It’s more of an art exhibit/tiny concert hall where every piano is shrink wrapped like the plastic forks in airplane meal containers, not a bench in sight. The whole place screams “don’t touch me”, yet for some reason a lady checks every five seconds to see if they’re in tune (bringing an open cup of water near open grand pianos!!). The staff are friendly There’s a tiny room that has a decent little grand that has enough tiny scratches to be worthy of letting street urchins playing it but honestly you could find a better one in a local church or nursing home where you get more than a five minute limit. If you’re dreaming of getting a beautiful piano someday, skip this place and go to a local piano store where you can sit down at a brand new German made concert grand that’s worth as much as a house and play...
