Unprofessional- amateurish management they lack common sense .I am not the only person to post a negative review there are several to choose from- do your due diligence and RESEARCH before moving here .The facade work is invasive - started in 2019 when the scaffold was erected - it is now spring 2025 it is still going on- the work will go on until summer or maybe fall 2025. You will not have peace and quiet in your apt during the day the drilling has gone on for over 4 years .The building reverberates you hear the drilling even if it is 5 floors away or on the other side of the building - never ending drilling. . Monterey is not a gracious building- it's a big dorm or motel - transient . Constant turnover in doorman , handymen etc many long term employees have left . The elevators are slow or broken ,the laundry is expensive- broken, moldy machines -.there have been rats in the apts and garbage is often piled high on 97 street blocking the sidewalk .Many tenants are unhappy as they moved in years ago when it was managed by Related and the building was better run .Facade work puts toxic dust in the apts and the industrial strength cleaners herbicides from their "garden" and rodenticide in the tree pits .. Real challenge with dogs as each exit is dirty under scaffold or crowded.Wipe your dogs feet after a walk the scaffold keeps a lot of dirt and pesticides in that never gets washed away by rain - they dont properly maintain the exits - 97 street exit has a permanent sludge form the oil from the garage mixed with garbage . .My dog died this past March at 8 years old of an environmental cancer - this toxic environment was probably a contributing factor. affected his mouth and paws..Elevators are packed with delivery people. no separate elevator banks they are slow and frequently out of service.WATCH your cats no screens in the windows- building WONT install them have been 3 cat deaths from falling out the windows that I have witnessed . Sad to see a dead cat on the scaffolding a few months ago. . Health threat from mosquitoes when you open the windows in warmer weather. There are better places to live .Package delivery is slow they dont have enough help-if you think this is a full service luxury building think again. It is also unfriendly I am always surprised when visiting friends and family in the city how much friendlier their buildings are maybe its because its so transient some buildings value long term residents the...
Read moreI’m writing this review from the perspective of someone who doesn’t live at the Monterey, but visits a friend here regularly. And honestly, I don’t know why this place is even allowed to operate like this. I used to enjoy visiting – it seemed like a decent building – but now, it’s a total disaster.
My friend has been living here for about a year, and it’s been a constant construction zone. I’m not exaggerating. Every time I go over, it’s like walking onto a job site. The noise is absolutely insane – jackhammers, drills, saws – the whole cacophony. It starts early in the morning and goes on all day. I genuinely don’t understand how anyone can live like this. I’ve tried to have conversations with my friend, and we literally have to shout over the din. It’s impossible to relax, impossible to focus, just impossible to do anything normal. I can’t even imagine trying to work from home in that environment. I’d lose my mind. I honestly don’t know how my friend hasn’t gone completely bonkers yet. It’s affecting them too, they’re constantly stressed and exhausted. I’ve started avoiding visiting because it's so unpleasant, which makes me feel terrible, but I genuinely can’t stand being there for more than an hour or two. My friend’s been complaining multiple times, but they’ve been totally dismissive. No apologies, no compensation, no real explanation of when this torture will end. They set one end-date then another. It’s appalling If you’re considering moving here, please, please, PLEASE reconsider. I’m telling you as an outsider looking in: this is not a livable situation Pros: None that I can see. Cons: INSANE construction noise – makes the building uninhabitable Completely unresponsive and uncaring management Other building issues (pests, closed amenities) Would I recommend? Absolutely not. Avoid at all costs. I’m genuinely worried about my friend’s well-being living...
Read moreWe lived in the Monterey from August 2022 to August 2024.
The good: The first year was incredible. We loved the building and the exceptionally kind, attentive doormen and maintenance. The neighborhood is great: close to the 6 and Q trains, just a 10–15 minute walk to the park, and surrounded by several excellent restaurants and cafes. The proximity to the hospitals meant frequent sirens, but we didn’t mind.
The bad: Everything changed in the second year when construction began. Promises about when it would end were not kept, and eventually, no timeline was given at all. If you’ve read other reviews mentioning construction noise, believe them. When work was happening on our floor or line, staying inside became unbearable. I had a hybrid work schedule but had to commute to my office just to attend online meetings and teach classes in peace.
They would hang heavy-duty covers over the windows, blocking all natural light and making it feel like nighttime in the middle of the day. I had to keep the lights on for hours. My dog was so terrified she would hide under the bed, shaking, until the workers left or the noise stopped. Ultimately, her well-being and our mental health led us to move out.
Other notes: Unlike some reviewers, we had no issues with our deposit, we received it in full and were not charged unreasonably.
Bottom line: Once the construction is over, this will again be a wonderful place to live. The building has great amenities (I used the gym daily), and the staff truly care. The neighborhood is fantastic. But as long as construction continues, the building is unlivable. I strongly believe the management should consider installing insulated windows to help current and future residents cope with the noise. It would benefit everyone, including the building, in...
