I stopped by REI for the first time to get some hammock advice and accessories ahead of a camping trip. I cannot stress how informative Rob was in what I'd need for the trip. I walked out of the store pretty confident that I knew what I'd need to make the trip as pleasant as possible. Rob ALSO sold me on a Co-Op membership while I was there - and, armed with the knowledge he'd passed along I knew I'd be back, so I signed up. I picked up a pair of hiking boots and some other supplies on that trip, and also received amazing advice for tying laces and getting the boots to fit just right while I was there - I regrettably can't remember the woman's name who helped me but she was brunette and on the shorter side, and very wise in the ways of lace tying.
Well, 3 days later my bike tire popped. I knew right where to take it. That membership paid for itself within the same week, basically, with how much I saved bringing my bike back to REI. Bruce helped me through that hiccup, had great advice for tire care, and had me back on the road in time to finish up my nightly bike ride with the pup (you can see how excited the dog was for that fact in the photo!)
One of the other things Rob warned me about was having the proper backpack. Good call! 1 week after signing up for that co-op membership, I received a coupon for REI gear and saved a hefty amount on a new 60L backpack, just in time for my trip. Andrea helped me pack it this weekend, and had loads of greeat advise for keeping everything stored and balanced just right.
Knowing what I know now, I was settings myself up for a bad time without the amazing staff at this store. I feel much more confident that my hiking trip is going to be a great one, armed to the teeth with wisdom and great gear. Thank...
Read moreI received a $100 REI gift card as an early Christmas present and went to this store to use it. I picked out 3 items and went to check out. The cashier told me that there wasn’t a balance on the gift card, and it had never been loaded. I left without purchasing the items. When I went to my car I checked the card balance on the REI website and it said $100. I went back in to ask why they would lie to me and try to get me to use cash instead of my gift card. After waiting in line again, the cashier that originally lied to me walked away! Wouldn’t even face me. I spoke to another rep who confirmed within 10 seconds that the card had $100 balance. They rang up my items again, but one of them didn’t reflect the sales price. They then made me walk them over to the rack I found the item on to make sure it was on sale, and it was. The sign said “30% off” and in small letters said “from 12/26-01/02” - so the sale doesn’t start until after Christmas. This store just advertises sales and tricks people into paying full price. All around horrible experience. And after all this, they still tried to sell me a membership - one that comes with a gift card! Be very careful shopping here and check the prices at...
Read moreMy feet have been killing me since I bought the wrong pair of Merrell hiking boots and I came to REI today to purchase a different pair of Merrell boots, the Moab, in store and get fitted so I knew I was wearing the right size. The customer service today was amazing. This was the customer service I had become accustomed to at higher end stores prepandemic but had since lost at virtually every experience. Except REI. This experience blew me away today. The person who measured me today took measurements for both feet and brought out a variety of styles and sizes to make sure I had the best fit. She welcomed me back, wished me well on our upcoming hiking trip, and it was the lowest pressure sale I've ever experienced. I browsed through the store, noting their wide variety of "inclusive size" clothes on well placed and easy to find racks labeled as such. When checking out, the person who processed the transaction was warm and relaxed, and genuinely laughed with me. I feel like I've been in an alternate universe for the last 30 minutes, in the best possible way. Better yet, every employee and patron in the store was masked! I only bought the boots today, but I'll be back for clothes. This...
