Orin Jewelers — Local services in Northville

I first went to Orin Jewelers in Northville 20+ years ago when our former insurance agent directed us there for an insurance claim jewelry repair on my engagement ring. Orin Jewelers provided us with a new appraisal after the insurance repair was completed . In 2019, an updated appraisal was needed. We used a jewelry store in our town owned by a neighbor. We were happy to discover that the same appraiser from Orin also provided the updated 2019 appraisal at our local jewelry store. We were very happy with both appraisals from This individual and provided our insurance company with the updated information and new replacement valuation (X). In 2021, the ring needed to be resized but we discovered it could not be done due to an issue with the insurance repair done at Orin Jewelers and the ring was unable to be worn. In June 2023, someone we knew and trusted began working at Orin Jewelers and we decided to return there for some needed jewelry repairs on 3 different items. At that time, I also decided to upgrade my ring so it could be worn. I decided to have my diamond reset in a new setting that I purchased at Orin Jewelers for about $3100. I provided the past appraisals and GIA paperwork at the time of purchase of the new setting and waited for the ring to be reset which was scheduled to be completed mid to late July. When I picked up the ring, I thought it was beautiful. The sales associate provided me with the new appraisal and happily told me my ring had gone up in value. Imagine my surprise when I got home and discovered that my ring had actually gone DOWN in value. I brought in a ring valued at X and made a purchase of $3100 upgrade to be given a ring valued at $650 less than when I first brought it in before the purchase of a $3100 upgrade.I immediately contacted the store questioning this. The associate said she would look into it and call back. Several days later, I received a call with a convoluted explanation about the original appraiser no longer working there. The associate understood my distress and said she would look into it further. I then received a call from the manager using the same explanation about the appraiser and, in addition, the fluctuation of diamond valuation. He explained to me several times why I should be happy with my purchase. He asked what he could do to make me happy and, using his logic and explanation, I asked that the purchase price of the band be adjusted to align with his reasoning. He laughed. The manager said he was sorry I was unhappy and said he would talk to the owners. I have not been contacted since that time and I am sure I was only contacted initially in an attempt to stop me from giving an unfavorable review. I have provided all the information, appraisals, bills of sale etc to our insurance company to protect ourselves. I am not sure who buys a piece of jewelry for $3100 and expects to receive a piece back that is devalued by $650 of the original value but that is the case. Am I happy with how my ring looks? Yes, it’s very pretty. Am I confident of the value and authenticity of this piece of jewelry ? ABSOLUTELY NOT. Does it provide me with a sense of happiness when I look at it? Unfortunately no, not right now; but I am trying to focus on what the ring symbolizes and trying to forget the situation surrounding it. There are many independent jewelry stores to choose from in this area. Please learn from our error and experience. It is not worth the potential heartache and monetary loss. Jewelry is an expensive and meaningful purchase and I would NOT recommend Orin Jewelers as the place to do that. Update - The owner contacted me personally. We spoke for a long time and I felt that he listened and that he really did want me to be happy. He suggested a way to resolve the matter. I was very disappointed in my experience based on all the positive reviews. I sent in a picture of what I was looking for and someone called me back and said "we don't have to make it custom, we basically have that ring." So I was very disappointed to arrive and see nothing close to what I was looking for, except in a paper catalog. The saleswoman was very pushy. I was interested in getting my engagement ring and wedding band together because I'll be extremely disappointed to buy one and then not have them fit together perfectly. When I told the saleswoman my budget, she told me "the only way to get a good sapphire is to spend 5-7K on just the gem" and that I should "just buy the engagement ring now and save up for the wedding band later." That's not how budgets work lady. I had a maximum amount I feel comfortable wearing on my finger in case of loss/theft, breaking,etc. I wasn't asking them to do something impossible, but to work with me. When I expressed my budget again she really wasn't interested in working with me anymore. So I found another AMAZING jeweler who could custom make my rings exactly how I want (actually cad designing it so I can see it in more than a magazine picture), within my budget (without shaming or pushing me to spend more), with a beautiful sapphire (that did not cost...
