Wegman's is one of those stores that has a weird cult following, so I was curious to see their first Connecticut store opening 10 minutes from my house. Checked it out in the mid-morning expecting it to be a zoo, but the crowds weren't so bad. Credit to to them for having a system in place.
The credit largely stops there, though. It's incredibly poorly laid out, dark, and everything is a depressing shade of early 90's brown. If I hadn't known better, I'd have assumed this place had been open my entire life. Horrendously dreary vibe. Considering they built it from scratch, you'd figure they might have included a window or two, but I guess not.
As for opening day struggles, there were a great deal of staff in bright shirts stood around in big circular gaggles, blocking aisles. I don't know what their deal was, because when I asked one guy if he could point me to the eggs, he had to find a kid who could tell him first. I'm guessing they probably won't always be there though (fingers crossed?)
Finally, the checkout I was at went down, and the caesar salad I bought had some already rotting lettuce in the middle (on the first day? Wow) which didn't do them any favors.
I've always found people with cultlike appreciation for big capitalist entities bizarre in the extreme, but I was hoping Wegman's might prove an exception. It isn't. Stick to any of the other grocery stores on the post road, they're cheaper and somehow feel newer, despite Wegman's being precisely 24 hours old at the time of me writing this. When your brand new store is more depressing than an aging shoprite, it really might be time to reevaluate your branding and design...
Read moreI'm a central NYer and truly a "cult follower" As well as a Wegmans' addict. The bar has been set high for customer service, community outreach, supporting sustainable products, maintaining excellent food quality and standards. This is a family- owned business. To achieve and maintain the standards they have achieved and be consistent is uncommon. Their longevity speaks volumes! Have you been to the local stores where they have one cashier and push you to use self-checkout? Wegmans will never create this stressful situation for you. The robot roaming the aisles is a massive distraction in local stores. Wegmans employs people and my sister being one of those people, treats them all with the utmost respect and care. As in any job, you may occasionally find something amiss but I doubt it will match the moldy yogurt I bought or the sushi which had hair in it at the local grocery markets. This is the short list of issues with these stores. I can brag for days and of course, I will. I'm supremely grateful for Wegmans and the Wegmans family for finally breaking ground in CT. I have waited since 1990 for your arrival. Now I don't have to rush home to Ithaca, Syracuse, Rochester, or Newark to experience the BEST! Waiting for the next Wegmans and my opportunity to finally work with this...
Read moreEverything that wegmans is known for is what I have qualifications for and then some. The interview was dragged out, and honestly if I'm not a qualified candidate in their eyes then I wanna see the staff they are bringing in. Probably bottom of the barrel minimum wage slackers, or liars who are gunna say they can do this and that and lie on their resumes but scam the company once they get to a position of power. I bet you anything. I said I was looking between 23 and 25 an hour and they would call me back the end of this week with an answer I got an email the next day saying no.. you're all ready building yourself a very unrealistic reputation in norwalk. And with the diversity we have within this amazing community pay people what they deserve. Over 17 yrs experience as a retail manager crossed trained ran food bank food drives, was number 1 in sales increase in the whole mid Atlantic region which is 160 stores. To get a email the next day saying sorry. One, thanks for making me feel inadequate and unworthy and under qualified and 2nd you'll regret not having a superior player on your team. I suggest you don't stay open til midnight tho..for the...
