My experience with StoneMan Climbing was wonderful and the highlight of my time in Phoenix I scheduled two trips with them while in town to visit friends. Caleb was very thoughtful during the booking process when determining which locations I might find most fun and interesting. He asked me to describe what I liked most about my past climbing trips and which crags were my favorite. Without being prompted, the area he suggested for the first day was one I identified when planning this vacation, while the second was to include my first multi-pitch climb.
In preparation for the first excursion, Caleb asked me to make note of which routes at the crag were of interest and within my grade. This day of climbing was excellent and he made me feel secure by administering a thorough test to verify my competency at belaying the leader which left no doubt that he was serious about safety. We started with a pair of easier routes to get warmed up, moved on to a couple that were solidly within my ability, and finished with a challenging technical climb that was extremely satisfying.
The second trip was a few days later and Neil guided me on a couple of single pitch climbs before we concluded the trip with a two-pitch route. The focus of this day was on instruction so we covered process, technique, and safety. This interaction helped enhance my understanding of rappelling and introduced the principles of rope management and building anchors. I am now eager to expand this knowledge and climb more multi-pitch routes. Neil and I continued to discuss various technical and training aspects of climbing while we hiked out of the crag, making this a very fulfilling experience.
Both Caleb and Neil were friendly and helpful guides, clearly concerned about safety. I would not hesitate to climb...
Read moreWhere do I Begin? My girlfriend and I have been climbing indoors for the last six months and Although we really love indoor climbing, our goal is to learn everything we need to know to safely climb outside. We discovered StoneMan Climbing through Yelp. We called on a Friday night and left a message and said that we were interested in climbing and we got a call back within the hour from Aaron. We booked a climb for the following month and set up a meeting spot located at the base of Mount Lemmon in Tucson. We felt comfortable immediately after meeting Aaron due to his laid-back disposition. I had seen several videos on YouTube of him, climbing, and already knew that he was a very experienced climber. We followed him up the mountain to our first climb, where he thoroughly explained all of the Climbing procedures. After we completed a couple of climbs at the first site that we went to, we went to another site even further up, and did several more climbs. The Second climb was definitely more challenging than the first but luckily, Aaron was at the bottom assisting us every step of way. We loved Aaron's techniques and how good he is at explaining everything that needs to be learned in order to climb safely. Obviously it takes a lot of experience to do this on your own but this place is definitely the way to go if you want to move in the right direction. I highly recommend Stoneman, (Aaron from Stoneman actually lol) if you are interested in a safely guided trip with a person that really knows the routes in which you will be taken to. I am booking another climb with Aaron just as soon as it gets a little bit cooler. If anybody who reads this wants to share the cost of a guided trip then just...
Read moreI had the spontaneous idea to book a climb after hours on a Friday for a Sunday. I then decided I wanted to extend my climb to be longer while driving in an area with spotty service. Lauren was very accommodating and communicative to ensure that I would have a good time. I ended up not feeling great Sunday because Bisbee- and a bit into the hike my guide Caleb suggested we reschedule for the next day. He is so accommodating and we had the best day Monday. It was my first real real climbing experience but I have a solid mountaineering foundation with backpacking, so Caleb was able to suggest a route that was still adventurous and challenging for my skill set. I got to do a multi pitch trad my first climb! He knows so much about the Cochise and even more about trad climbing and guiding. He even rallied me to summit the dome when I was a little wigged out by the wind- he totally respects your limits and I am so glad he did. Awesome day of hiking and climbing- I felt very safe physically while climbing and otherwise. I am a female with no relatives or friends for thousands of miles in any direction from Cochise and I would suggest Caleb as a guide to any other women as well. Lunch he provided was delicious, great conversation and more climbing education than you can imagine. Even added history lessons if that's your jam. Excellent value and I hope to get to climb with...
