We stopped by the other day with high hopes for the store, but ultimately left without purchasing anything. I like the concept of your store and wanted to provide some constructive feedback.
Lack of Narrative: None of the items in the store had any backstory about them or the artists that produced them. To differentiate them from mass produced Chinese goods and to justify the increased price, people will want to know something about the artists, where they are from and the cultural relevance. People in DC come from all over the place and having the location for these items would seem like the least that could be provided.
Store Theming: the store is very modern with glass shelves and bright lights. The theme of the store did not match the hand made items that were on sale. I think I was expecting a more classic Americana look. Despite rumors the local liberal population is quite patriotic.
Price tags: Having the bar code stickers on the items seemed like a mismatch for the items on sale. The uniformity of the price tags added to my inability to think these were hand made items. I kept flipping them over looking for Made in China on the bottom. I specifically remember doing this for the Cardinal serving trays in the front of the store.
Uniqueness: let’s take the dog mugs in the back left of the store. I looked to see if there were two of the same dog so I could see if each was a unique drawing, but every mug was a different dog breed That seemed odd as some breeds are more popular. It also made me suspicious they were mass produced.
I love the concept of your store, but wanted to provide feedback on why I came in with intent to buy, but...
