Can't stress enough how overpriced everything in the store is. I purchased gummies, and didn't notice they cost $4.75 until after my change was given back. I told the clerk this was 2 dollars more than I've ever paid for them anywhere ever and his reply was a condescending "sugar is expensive." The dude had like 100 pounds on me so it was a confusing tactic, but wtv. I live a block away and I'll be letting everyone know. <3

I used to shop at Gold Star Mart before Kulvinder passed away because it was close and he was a great guy who kept his prices low and helped whenever he could. Literally let us put stuff on tab. I started working there to help Simi (his wife) out but then she sold it and the new owners changed everything. I started going out of my way to shop here for stuff because it was cheaper and I could no longer afford to shop at the store I worked at and shopped at since I moved downtown. My owner found out and gave me a discount to price match their cigarettes so I wouldn’t shop there but now that I don’t work there I’ve been shopping at Southside since they don’t price match for me anymore and my cigarettes are almost a full $3 cheaper here. Been a regular for months now and they’re SO helpful and kind, the store is always clean and organized, never runs out of what I like to eat and drink, and the owner will stock things for regular customers if you ask them! Definitely recommend the extra block or two if you’re in the area, it’s worth it in the prices alone. Plus they sell single beer. They even open earlier and close later. Only negative is that their hours aren’t EXACTLY correct. Been there 10-15 mins before closing and found it closed so I talked to a worker and they said they close around 10:40-10:45pm instead of 11 so keep that in mind!

Oh and random story but once in the beginning they were out of my cigarettes (now they never are because they know I’m a regular) and the employee didn’t try to upsell me or even downsell me. He told me straight up that I could go to Gold Star Mart if I didn’t mind the price increase and that another store had just opened up a few blocks down and he had heard their prices were reasonable. That was so nice and something we were not supposed to do at Gold Star when I worked there! It was so nice of him that I just bought another brand of cigarettes from them anyway because that’s what a community market should do! Look out for the community. We weren’t even supposed to tell customers that Southside had single beers EVEN THOUGH WE DIDN'T EITHER because they were hoping customers didn’t know about Southside and would just buy a 4 or 6 pack from us. Anything to make money. This place is legit! I’ll add photos of the inside next time I go because there are none right now and that’s a shame because it’s a nice little store in there. I think they remodeled when they got new owners a long time ago because it wasn’t always so nice. I honestly think Gold Star modeled their store after Southside because they’re almost the same with the flooring, counter, built in...

The employees were basic friendly but they really do an unwelcoming and aggressive job when it comes to the restroom. I used it and even cleaned up the area and did additional cleaning to make it nice for the convenience store person because I used to work in one of these places and I know nobody likes to clean up a restroom for anybody. Yes I purchased stuff here first. Even so, one minute into closing the door I hear a bang on the door telling me I have to get out immediately because the person who works there is going to get in trouble because I used the bathroom.

When human decency takes a backseat to business operations I cannot favorably rate an establishment because it's not welcoming and it's anti-human.

The people were nice and friendly until they weren't and for no moral reason. Y'all can do better. Do you really want to be known as the heartless community store? What does it say about you and your customers? That you don't want to work while you're at work? That you actually don't care about people? Have some human decency and respect others as you would love them to respect you. They do not be following the...

The owner might feel however he wants about his business but the truth about his business always comes from customers... on sunday (01/08/2023) when there was partial power failure in Downtown Sac following the storm, the best practice would have been to close your shop as many did or sell the products at their right prices. I checked up an item I have been buying, there was no price tag on it. Funny enough, the lady there took advantage of the power failure and doubled the price (100%). You wouldn't drive to a shop to buy an item and then the prices are hiked outrageously just because of power failure....
