There is no love here.
The other negative reviews that people have already left pretty much encapsulate it, particularly about the appalling service and the defensive and uncaring management. I spoke with the waiter & manager after the meal and they were as defensive and unwilling to acknowledge my concerns as the other reviewers have stated.
I can only suppose that for the owner it’s just a (not-so-good) income source. They certainly haven’t put their heart into it. Unsurprisingly it was the emptiest restaurant we’ve ever been to in Sacramento.
Some people will continue to eat here because the location is good and the interior has a measure of visual charm. Some people don’t mind if where they go feels actively unwelcoming and uncaring, the service is poor, and the food is halfhearted. We won’t be back.
The kitchen needs a shaping up and a transfusion of energy. The food was just so-so. Uninspired recipes & presentation. Not abundant, no ‘wow’ factor. Disorganized: our appetizer came out when we were almost finished with our meals. Meals not only didn’t arrive together, there were very long gaps in between when one plate arrived and the next. One of us had actually finished their meal before the final dish arrived - and that final dish was just a sandwich. (And then on top of that, the waiter had gotten the order entirely wrong and we had to wait even longer. He actually argued about this, too. “You didn’t order that!” Yes. Yes we did. We know what we ordered. He, on the other hand, was only paying half attention when taking our order because he was disinterested, as is everyone else there.) And there was no excuse for the kitchen’s inefficiency as the restaurant was almost empty.
I suggest that the owner take a long, hard look at what they’re hoping to achieve here. If I owned a restaurant and my staff behaved with awkward unfriendliness and snippy, sassy, arrogance from the first interaction - and this includes the managers - and if they provided disinterested, careless, simply poor service, I would sack them. ‘Nice’ is something you can’t teach. I would hire friendly, polite, professional people who would be focused on providing excellent service.
I guarantee that if the kitchen were switched on and the service were decent, this place could be one of the city’s destination restaurants. As it is, it’s languishing half asleep. Such a shame.
If you want a great pub meal, head over to Foundation on 41st & L. (One of the excuses the manager made for the poor service here at Fox & Goose was that there was only one server on. Please see my attached photo that shows how empty they were). We ate at Foundation a couple weeks ago at the same time of day and they were PACKED, and there was only one server handling the entire restaurant. He was energetic, super friendly and fun, service was efficient and fast, food arrived on time and was delicious and beautiful to look at. When an owner cares, it shows. When they don’t, it...
Read moreI'd like you aware of an incident that happened at your establishment Tuesday Feb 14,2023 around 11am. My husband and I who are African American visited your restaurant for brunch. We decided upon this restaurant as a 3rd option because the other 2 choices were closed. We have never been to Fox & Goose. We approached the host who advised us it would be a 10 minute wait. Fine no worries. We looked around and there were several tables available but ok no biggie. We sat on the bench and waited. I'm not sure if you're familiar but the bench to wait is right in front of the host stand. So close that if I was to sit on the edge of the bench, the host and I could hold hands. Not 5 minutes later, less than 5 minutes actually, a white couple came in. And the hostess sat them right away without hesitation. My husband and I were appalled. When the host came back we asked what was that about. He apologized and said he'd forgot about us but now he'd seat us right away. How so? It was less than 5 minutes ago that he had just told us it was a 10 minute wait. Also that we were sitting arms length from him. After he seated us, we asked to speak to a manager. A young white woman came over whom never gave us her name even after I asked for it 3 times. She apologized and chalked it up to them being busy. Non chalantly she asked what would we like her to do to make our visit better. I asked her what do she think she should do. She said she didn't know. My husband asked if I wanted to leave but I said no let's give the food a try anyways. We already been to 2 places that were closed. Our waiter Raul was perfect. No complaints we even tipped him. The food was just ok, nothing special. We did order 2 Mimosa. So when the bill came we asked for the manager once again.. She came over with an attitude and sense of irritation. We asked her if our drinks could be compd do to the incident. And these were her words verbatim "WHY WOULD I DO THAT?" Wow!!! Again we were appalled by this. We explained how we as African Americans were told to wait while a white couple was sat before us and asked if she knows what that feels like. Of.course she ignored the question and told us she had no authority to comp any thing. This is when I asked her name 3 times. She never gave it to me. Instead she over talked me and said she'll give me the general manager info for me to call and speak with them. Wow!!! I've never been disrespected and humiliated this way in a restaurant before. My husband gave her a quick lesson on racism and discrimination and how blacks are treated in America. I guess she didn't like that too well. Angrily she snatched our tab and yelled FINE ILL PAY FOR YOUR DRINKS OUT MY OMN POCKET. This behavior and treatment is unnecessary and unacceptable. I will never visit your establishment again. And I will tell my story to as many ears...
Read moreI'm so disappointed in the service my friends and I received here this past weekend. I'd been looking forward to finally trying this place out after working in the Downtown area for years and hearing great things about it but just never having the chance to visit. My husband and I were invited to brunch with some friends so we were pretty excited to get out of the house and eat somewhere new. Unfortunately the problems began before we could even find parking. Our friends arrived early to wait for a specific table outside since they brought their dog and we brought our infant. They were promised that table after waiting an hour, yet told as soon as it freed up that they couldn't be seated until the rest of the party arrived (despite the fact that we were literally parking) and the table they waited for was given to someone else who had just walked in. When we finally got there, we were seated in a very unfavorable spot as we had a stroller with us. The hostess obviously saw that we had one but didn't bother mentioning that we would have to leave our stroller on the sidewalk until we all got settled in and ready to look at the menu. I know exactly what the ADA requirements are as I've worked for the Building department of the county this restaurant lies in, so I get it. But given the fact that they already gave our friends a hard time prior to our arrival (and whom are regular customers), they could have easily sat us somewhere else or simply made a one time exception. Instead, my husband pushed the stroller all the way back to the car because we didn't trust leaving it on the street since we were seated so far away and wouldn't be able to keep an eye on it. By the time my husband got back, we sat there for maybe five minutes before deciding to take our business to Iron Horse Tavern. You have no idea how much of a let down this experience was, particularly me being a huge foodie and fan of all things English. Maybe we'll try to come back in another year or so. Or maybe not. I just hope if we decide to take the time and burn the fuel to give this place another shot that their customer service won't...
