Let me start of by stating that I am a gi guy from a very traditional gi school. With that being said I realized I needed to work on my no gi game (my entire game if I am being honest but I digress) and from what I heard 10th Planet is the place to be for no gi. While I have dropped in on other 10th Planet locations while traveling for work this was my first time at the 10th P, SLC location and I must say I was not disappointed. The atmosphere was immediately welcoming with Amir spending several minutes getting to know me and making me feel welcome. The class was a standard class you would expect anywhere with warmups, technique, drilling and sparring. The instruction was top notch. For those unfamiliar with Amir, he has a day job as a university professor. Why is this important on the mats you may ask? Well I believe the background and training he has undergone in this profession has given him the ability to relate to those unable to assimilate more sophisticated information (dumb it down for us lay folk), after all not everyone does math with letters instead of numbers on a daily basis (or ever).

Besides being the only exclusively NoGi Jiu Jitsu gym in the SaltLake area the environment is a super welcoming, chill, safe and professional place to get “World Class” training for all categories of expertise, from dedicated competitors and enthusiasts to older hobbyists like myself and beginners of all ages. All of the staff are awesome, knowledgeable and informative, as well as friendly and inviting. They are willing to give you the personal attention needed to progress at a relatively steady pace. The head instructor is Dr. Amir Allam who got his Black Belt Directly from Eddy Bravo Himself and has competed at the Highest levels of Jiu Jitsu all over the world stage. No joke, this man is Top Tier and his knowledge and experience are a treasure trove of bad assery, plus he’s a pretty cool down to earth guy which is always a plus. They also offer Striking and Muay Thai Classes included in your membership with no extra charge. I’ve trained at other gyms and they truly don’t compare. Super Awesome Gym!!! Highly Recommended!!! I recently stopped by 10th Planet Salt Lake City on my way to Las Vegas to compete at IBJJF Nogi Worlds. I wasn’t sure how this would go, as I’m not a 10th planet member nor had I ever trained at a 10th planet. I live in a small town on the west coast in Canada and train at an independent mma gym. Being a smaller, older grappler (57 years old and 5’9”) I need to be mindful of who I train with. The tone of a gym is set by the head instructor and this place is filled with awesome people. I felt safe and welcomed, and there was absolutely no sense of any big egos. After speaking with Amir, I could see why this place is such a gem. If you are thinking of getting into, or just trying BJJ, I highly recommend you check this place out. It’s never too late to start, I began at the age of 50.
