San Diego City College has been my golden ticket to an education.
I'm getting the same education (freshman and sophomore) I would at UCSD or SDSU without paying the university price. Most of the professors I have also teach at SDSU, UCSD, USD and CSU San Marcos.
Community College is the smarter way to go.
They have a program called F.Y.E. (First Year Experience) that walks you through every aspect of starting or going back to school. You basically are assigned a support team made up of a counselor for your educational goals and a peer mentor who helps you get into campus life, whether it's starting a club or or joining an honors program.
Pro Tip: you can only use F.Y.E. your first year but after that you can apply to be a peer mentor; its decent pay and super convenient when you're taking classes a couple doors down.
I know often people don't want to go to community college but they don't know what they're missing. ~ tuition is super cheap (maybe free, check with financial aid for a thing called the BOGW) ~ you can study abroad for a third of the price (sometimes financial aid can foot most of the bill and some are completely scholarship paid for) ~ small class sizes mean the professors actually knows your name (if you're looking for letters of recommendation or other perks it's much easier) ~ we still have athletics teams and games ~ student government is a great opportunity to refine or build our leadership skills and their are rewards for your work like paid trips to DC, Sacramento, Monterrey, LA, among other places.
I'm a work study which basically means while I'm going to school I get paid (minimum wage but tax free) to work somewhere local like a college, university, VA, the county etc. They are super flexible with scheduling because they know you're a student.
I'm a military veteran working on my bachelors and the veterans office has been an immense resource when it comes to using my GI Bill. Just get in there early to get your paperwork started.
All in all you get a lot more opportunities at city and they have a lot more resources, clubs, and classes than other local...
Read moreCurrently trying to enroll using my GI bill. There is little to no communication between the different offices. Their VA office who has on countless occasions been extremely unprofessional and has never been able to answer any of my questions let alone take any of my paper work. they only use the same lines as thats not us, or they offer to give me another copy of their VA handbook and tell me not to stress about it. I have been dealing with all of this for about a month now. I showed up with my DD-214 in hand and told the admissions office that i am a vet who would like to go to school here. however I do not qualify for their priority registration, even though I applied before the deadline, when I tried to get this fixed I was reffered from the admissions office to the va office back to the admissions office, only to be told that I need to to talk to someone whom I had never heard of and that they were sorry. Their counselors seem to not care about the student. my required session wight he counselor consisted of looking at my assessment scores and reciting what those already told me. followed by me being told just pick a history and ... how about an art class. It seems to me that they only look at you as money coming in and are not genuine in trying to help you achieve your goal let alone answering any questions. I would be cautious in applying at this school. Their finance office however was able to help me with my fafsa and did answer all of my questions. After a month of getting the run around the only thing i have been able to do is to submit my fafsa... everything else i am still fighting with the school on. As for their actual classes I have yet to attend however their neglect and lack of responsibility has made it very discouraging to attend school. I can only hope that their teachers are better than the way their administration is being run. I would certainly look at the negative reviews on here, because a pretty garden and a big burrito does not matter in the grand...
Read moreI'd like to think that because of Covid, there is a lack of help from this college. I have been trying my very best for the last month to do everything myself without the help from any employees at this college. I have not been contacted regarding how to get enrolled, registered, what classes I need, financial aid, etc. I have been struggling since I have submitted my application to this college. You basically have to figure out everything on your own which isn't hard for me to do because I was walked through the steps from my previous college who actually took the time to help me out. While I understand quite a few things, there are some things that I don't understand and that I have questions about but getting into contact with anyone at this college is very difficult. Even through emails, no one responds. This college lacks the skill for helping their future students. I believe that I have done everything necessary in order to be a student but getting in touch with a counselor is the biggest problem. Making an appointment with a counselor via zoom, is quite a struggle and I have messaged quite a few employees at the college but yet, I still haven't received any responses. I am about to give up and just try somewhere else although this college is very convient for me, it's not worth the struggle and hassle at...
