As born and raised San Franciscans that have since moved away, we have loved visiting this shop for unique gifts and special ornaments. Unfortunately, tonight was an absolute disappointment. We made it in to town with just enough time tonight to stop in for our annual SF ornament (6:40pm) We were met with a closed sign, even though the hours posted online and on the storefront indicated 11-7pm with no special holiday hours posted). We saw the sales associate inside, all of the lights were on, so we tapped on the window to ask if we could just make a quick purchase. Upon opening the door, he rudely snapped that he was closed and that this was Christmas so he could do whatever he wanted and he didn’t care how far we drove, his register was closed. Honestly, as a retail employee I understand that it is exhausting at this time of year. For a small business, providing excellent customer service is key, but being kind is critical. We didn’t need special treatment or even to have him open the door and allow us in to shop…but the attitude, demeanor and inflection and condescension in his tone was unnecessary and off putting, we won’t be returning. So disappointed. It would have been as easy to say no kindly and...

COULDN'T RECOMMEND MORE!!!! I recently visited the city with an out of state relative. We had been to several souvenir shops prior to SF Mercantile. My cousin had spent a ton of money already and did not have much to show for it! Well the stuff was much cheaper for identical or similar items she had already purchased for much more. The guy heard us talking, and helped her find, and even reduced the price of a piece of jewelry, the remaining items she needed to on her list. One of which was a cute cable car coffee mug. When we got home and she was unpacking, there were a pair of mugs in her bag. There was a post-it note inside that read "just for you". We were both so touched by the thoughtfulness, there was no way I wasn't writing...

I’ve never posted a negative review of anywhere before but I really feel like management should talk with their staff, hoping that results from this post. The store is very cute. We were having a wonderful time shopping in the district until coming to San Francisco Mercantile. The lady working there was so rude and mean. I literally left crying. I understand it’s a hard time in retail but it is for...

If you are traveling in Haight-Ashbury street, this is the location you need to pick extraordinary local souvenirs. Starting from Golden Gate Bridge symbolic ornaments, t-shirts, tote bags to locally made candles with interesting scenes( fresh cut grass, dirt, HYW 1 smell, hot dog…freshly baked bread) Prices are reasonable for location and to compare other touristy areas. Enjoy 😉

I love going in here even as a SF local. I can get SF or CA themed gifts for out of town family or friends. I've even picked up a few items for myself. They also carry art from local artists. It's not cheesey as some of the other stores in the area.
