I’ve often seen the quirky little Panhandle through the window of a car, but last week, I had the privilege of seeing it on foot and up-close. It was a pleasant experience. As evident on the map, the park is not very wide, but it is long. I took a walk circling the entire park, which lasted maybe 20-30 minutes. I got to people watch and appreciate the nearby architecture while getting some light cardio in. I also enjoyed a quick lunch here on one of the benches.
There’s winding paths around the park for both cyclists and people who are walking, and the majority of the park consists of flat grassy areas and trees. I kind of wish there was more plant and wildlife diversity, however. I also think that the park is quite boxed-in in the neighborhood, with most of the stores and businesses being a couple blocks up the hill. Additionally, what makes this park a little less interesting for me is its lack of a view (which… it’s not on a hill, so I can’t expect that of it, but still).
Overall, I can’t say it’s even in my top 5 or top 10 list of San Francisco parks, but it’s still a great place to be, especially if you want to exercise, picnic, or have something else to see in the...
Read moreBest for walking/biking around the path along the north side and along with the Fell and Oak Street Bikeways. Surrounded by residential area, mostly victorian houses and the famous painted ladies. It is a tourist spot so parking is very limited, almost impossible to find available parking spot Also, San Francisco are known for the steepest hills so if you're going around with bike make sure it's an e-bike. 3 stars because of difficult parking. We didn't even got the chance to get down the car, aside from limited parking, road is super steep and crowded with tourists. Even on weekdays it is still crowded. Best time to go is when everyone is...
Read moreThe Panhandle is an ideal place to enjoy a pleasant & refreshing moment. As an eastern extension of Golden Gate Park, it is mostly utilized & appreciated by the locals. It has a lane for cyclists (Fell Street side) & one for joggers (Oak Street side). There is an area for children as well as several basketball courts. Plenty benches for senior rest stops & acres of lawn for picnics, group activities & other special events. The landscape is meticulously maintained by Rec & Park. Hard to believe that back in 60's, the Panhandle was almost paved over in favor of a highway. The communities fought back & were able to...
