Best rail experience I have had in the USA. $10 to get from downtown San Francisco to San Jose is a great deal. I wish this type of service was available all over the country.
There are several historical train stations along this track. The one at Santa Clara had a historical marker which reads:
SANTA CLARA DEPOT
THE SANTA CLARA DEPOT, BUILT IN 1864, WAS AN ORIGINAL WAYSTATION ON THE SAN FRANCISCO & SAN JOSE RAILROAD LINE. INITIALLY BUILT ON THE EAST SIDE OF THE TRACKS, THE DEPOT WAS MOVED IN 1877 TO ITS PRESENT LOCATION SO IT WOULD BE ON THE SAME SIDE OF THE TRACKS AS THE CITY AND UNIVERSITY.
IT IS THE OLDEST PASSENGER DEPOT STILL IN USE IN CALIFORNIA. THE STRUCTURE WAS PLACED ON THE NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES, FEBRUARY 28, 1980.
RESTORED IN 1986 BY SOUTH BAY HISTORICAL PATEROZA SOCIETY. PLACED BY THE HISTORICAL AND LANDMARKS COMMISSION 1982.

Read more11/18/23 rode morning Caltrain 9:18am from Santa Clara to San Mateo. Two complaints: seats and floor which close to the gate next to the bicycles cabin are dirty. I was mistakenly read web map Caltrain map Station as “Hayward Park/Hillsdale” as one station, but after I saw “Hillsdale” sign at station stop, I got off next station wrong, but it’s too late, the train had left, it’s two different station. I was a senior female person lost in a new place and was terrified saw a unhoused guy was sleeping on a station bench with head down to the ground and some needles and trash around him. But I still enjoy the train ride, the punctuated schedule, smooth ride, and...
Read moreCute little station with pretty much no facilities. To access the platform for San Francisco you need to go down and under. Lifts were not in operation when I visited.
There are a few places to sit if it's raining under shelter. No staff at the station and with delays of up to 60 minutes all I could do was wait. Surprised it isn't better connected with the airport requiring a bus transfer. Cash or local transport app which doesn't work unless you are...
