I'm a 52 yr old lawyer. I've always wanted to try stand up comedy, but didn't know where to start. A friend highly recommended Greg. I'm not joking when I say that Greg's class has changed my life. Greg has a lifetime of information and experiences to share with his students. He method of teaching lays a solid foundation to build upon. In the beginner class he goes over the basic joke structure, but to say that he teaches you how to write jokes or be funny misses the point. I could go on and on about all the things Greg has taught me. But the most important thing I've learned from Greg is HOW TO BE PRESENT AND HONEST WITH MYSELF. I've never had a more committed or intelligent teacher who was willing to "GO THERE" with me to get me past my self-doubt, inner critic and all those horrible things lurking in my subconscious that I wasn't even aware was holding me back. If this sounds like therapy, well, that's the mindset I've chosen to adopt for his class. There is literally something for everyone in Greg's class. If you just want to try some one liners, you can do that. If you want to say crazy things that are offensive, you can do that too. If you want to roll around on stage, go for it. Greg is a true artist, he knows his craft, and he wants to share that with the world. THANK YOU GREG!
p.s. His wife Gayla Johnson is awesome too, and she's actually way funnier...
Read moreI had already been fumbling through stand up performances for almost a year and feeling very frustrated. Writing comedy was a horrible chore because I was so unsure about what the audience would think was funny. Then, thank goodness, someone recommended Greg Dean.
Mr. Dean doesn't teach you " to be funny"...no... he teaches you what MAKES it funny...that any thing can be funny if written if you understand the technique of comedy. Over and over I heard people in the class give thanks for the safe space that he creates so that even the students that are shy feel safe.
There is instruction on writing comedy and there is also the chance to perform in front of the room and constructive notes are given to each performer. In addition, students are encouraged to call between classes - help is as close as the phone.
Mr. Dean also gave me something that greatly improved both my stand-up and my acting. I am not quite sure exactly how he did it, but suddenly I realized that I could relax. I didn't have to over try...I was already there...I just had to realize that the spot I had been searching for was inside me.
I am forever grateful that I somehow had the wisdom to enroll in Greg Deans Stand Up Comedy Classes. In my first performances after my 5 week class, everyone noticed the huge difference in my...
Read moreI've been wanting to do comedy for 35 years and finally got the nerve to make it through Greg's entire workshop (first time was 20 years ago, and i wasn't feeling the confidence) and now the advanced workshop and just had my very first show at the Hollywood Improv. I've always known I could do it. I just needed to figure out how to organize my material. But what I didn't know was that there is a science to joke writing. And Greg teaches that so masterfully! I learned how to write jokes that land... and kill! It was AMAAAAAAZING. I didn't die up there and I learned his method so well, that now my mind can't stop writing jokes all. day. long. THANK YOU, Greg! We also learned what works, how it works, why it works, stage work, act-outs, points of view jokes, riffing, ranting, how to use the mic, etc... I've also had a dream of being a comedy writer and working with other comics and we get to do that in class too. It's SO fun! I HIGHLY recommend this workshop to anyone. He cradles you through the entire process-- even your first show. I am eternally grateful and can't wait for the next workshop...
