SHORT REVIEW: Taking a ride on a sail boat out of Sister Bay was my absolute favorite thing I did in 2020. Absolutely loved it. Highly Recommended!
LONG REVIEW: Back in July, 2020 we went for a sunset cruise on the "Norra Dorr" sight-seeing boat out of Sister Bay, (which was fun!), and on the way back to the marina, I noticed several sail boats coming in, filled with people on the deck. I pointed this out to my wife, and she quickly checked her phone to see if we could go out on a sail boat for our next Door County adventure. Sure enough, she found the place, and reserved a mornign sail for us.
It turned out that we were booked for the 'Edith M. Becker', a beautiful 65' white hulled schooner that is just a work of art. It was worth the price of admission just to climb aboard such a masterpiece. Real wood decks, and big, beautiful wood masts. I was loving this adventure before we even cast off.
Captain Kristi took the boat out onto the water, engine engaged of course. We motored all the way out to the Eagle Point Lighthouse, then finally cut the engine, and were under sail all the way back to Sister Bay. First time in my life I was on a moving boat, on the water, that was nearly completely silent! Just the sounds of the breeze and water lapping the hull. It was a near perfect day, bright and sunny, with a nice wind. Lots of other boats were on the water as well.
The crew of Kristi, Kate and Claire did an outstanding job crewing the boat, and giving us all the information we could ask for on the history of the boat, and sailing in general. Could not have asked for a better crew. It was easy to understand how so many people get addicted to this lifestyle, it was one of the most amazing experiences of my life, and definately the best thing I did in 2020.
All we had to do is take our provided boat cushion, find a nice place to sit on the top of the cabin, and just enjoy the ride. Not the most comfortable of seating, but so what? Once the sails were set, you were free to walk around the deck, enjoying the beautiful views of Green Bay, Door County, and the boat itself. Time passed far too quickly, I didn't want the ride to end.
The next time I come back to Door County, I'm certainly going for another ride. HIGHEST...
Read moreThe scenery is gorgeous. The sunset was perfect. Captain John of the Edith Becker made what could have been a lovely evening a huge disappointment with his surly attitude and half-baked "sailing". The sailboat is fine. Not exactly well-appointed for anything but sitting in place and watching the sunset. The same view can be seen from the dock - for free! We motored out a very short way off shore. Raised the sails. Bobbed in the water for a bit. Listened to Captain John's canned rendition of the boat's history (recited with lackluster enthusiasm at best, as if he was immensely bored from having repeated it one thousand times before) and then motored back to the dock as soon as Captain John could reasonably call the excursion "done". While waiting for the sun to lower sufficiently so that he could turn back towards shore, Captain John bitterly complained about living in the Caribbean ("Amazon doesn't have one day Prime delivery service") and the "lack of food options" in the islands. He also complained about his current work schedule (7 days in a row, oh my!) Is this appropriate for this sunset sail? The only time Captain John perked up was when we were approaching the dock and he, very clearly, made his request for TIPS heard by one & all. His first mate, Isabella, was lovely though. She deserves a...
Read moreWhat an excellent time! There were six of us in our group. It was my son's 18th birthday gift from his grandparents who were also celebrating their 50th anniversary. I thought we might have spent too much money the day before setting sail. I was also thinking maybe I should have booked the scenic boat tour instead (I was doing the booking for my In-laws). So glad we didn't! We all were so happy with the trip! It was a beautiful sunset. The boat stayed out longer than the two hours they said it would be. My son and my daughter got to both raise a sail. My wife and mother in-law were so afraid to go on the boat, but soon felt comfortable relaxing and enjoying the rise and fall of each wave, save for my father in-law who tossed his cookies near the end. It was such a nice time. The girls taking care of the sails told us the tale of the boat and the fact that it had been around the world twice among other ventures. What an absolutely beautiful ride. Thank you, Kyla, Isabel and...
