There are places in this savage American wilderness where God still plays golf, and Edgewood Tahoe is one of them—carved like a surrealist painting into the shores of that big blue hallucination they call Lake Tahoe. This is not your average cowboy muni. No, this is Olympus. High-altitude golf for the deranged and the divine. The air is thin, the ball flies forever, and time loses all meaning. I saw three eagles on the front nine and a bald eagle overhead—it winked at me, I swear. A course like this demands reverence, adrenaline, and at least two flasks of good Kentucky bourbon.
The fairways at Edgewood are carpeted in emerald velvet, smoother than Sinatra’s best lies. You could land a Gulfstream on them. The greens? Fast, pure, and subtle—diabolically contoured like a Vegas showgirl with secrets. Each hole is a story, and every story gets stranger the deeper you go. You’ll tee off with the lake glinting like a sheet of mercury behind you, and chase your ball into pine corridors so perfectly manicured they must’ve been raked by angels on salary. The bunkers are shaped like sculpture, and for once—mercifully—they play like sand and not powdered concrete.
The routing here is no accident. It's a rollercoaster for the possessed, a symphony of elevation changes and intoxicating views. The par-3 17th alone is worth the trip: water left, trees right, wind in your face, and Lake Tahoe roaring behind you like the mouth of eternity. You don’t just play Edgewood—you surrender to it. I saw men laugh, cry, howl at the sky. One guy in a visor knelt on the 10th green and proposed to his wedge. This course turns golfers into poets, and poets into lunatics.
Edgewood isn’t a round of golf. It’s a full-blown religious experience dressed up in collared shirts and Titleist logos. By the time I limped off the 18th green—sunburned, delirious, and morally improved—I was ready to tattoo the scorecard on my chest. Five stars? Hell, give it six and a pack of smokes. This is the kind of golf course that restores your faith in everything… including the cruel, beautiful...

Read moreRecently played Edgewood. No better backdrop for a golf course than Lake Tahoe. The condition of the course (Tee to Green) was excellent.
So why only 2 Stars?
Golf course management allows non-players to accompany golfers on course. During our round the two groups in front of our group each had extra carts of “ride alongs”. One of the groups was a bachelor / wedding party. It was clear that several in the group hadn’t been on a course before. It was also clear that alcohol was as much of the focus as golf. Unfortunately, both groups were slow and diminished the experience. By the 17th hole our wait to tee off ballooned to 20 minutes. While we waited the tipsy “ride alongs” snapped pictures, heckled one another and disrupted play. The Edgewood experience reminded me of some weekend rounds I have played on public muni courses.
In speaking with course and proshop staff after the round I was informed that the Marshalls had been “sent home early”. I was also reminded that Edgewood is a “public resort course” and that I should have more “realistic expectations”. I was informed that my experience is fairly common at Edgewood. Both staff members I spoke with did apologize, so they do know what is appropriate.
So, if you play Edgewood, just lower your golf expectations and focus on the beauty that is Lake Tahoe. You will have...
