I have been frequenting this establishment for well over 20 years. I have always been treated kindly. I have enjoyed shopping and having quilts finished from their quilting artesians. HOWEVER!!!, today on February 17, 2025 when I entered the shop I was immediately asked to leave citing a situation that occurred nearly a year previously.
I am a disabled individual and I require a service animal for counter balance, bracing, forward mobility and several other specific tasks related to my disability. Nearly a year ago, my service animal and I were upstairs in the shop when a male adult came running up the stairs and charged in our immediate direction. As an animal would do in a situation such as this, being startled (as was I), my service animal barked. No one wants their service animal to bark in a public setting, however this man was running directly into us. My animal barked which under the circumstances would not be highly unusual. Regardless, as per the American Disabilities Act and service animal laws, I the handler was immediately able to demonstrate full control of my service animal. The law is very clear, should an animal bark, the handler must be able to demonstrate control over their animal OR if they do not they can be asked to leave the establishment.
On that specific day, not only did I demonstrate full control, but not a single employee from the establishment spoke to me about it. No one questioned me. No one asked me to leave.
Fast forward to today 2/17/2025, I am being told to leave the premises citing the situation which occurred nearly a year ago! I was also scrutinized, verging on being harassed, regarding the validity of my service animal. The store clerk questioned the validity of my animal on numerous fronts: 1- how is this a service animal? It’s not wearing the same harness as the last time when you came in? Answer: for my birthday I asked for new gear because the old harness was falling apart. 2- you said last time you were here that your dog wasn’t “certified”. So it’s not a service animal. Answer: there is no federal or state body which regulates service animals. At the time I came in I had not completed a public access program but regardless, it is not required. Nevertheless, out of my desire to improve upon my relationship with my service animal I have since completed the public access program and have documentation of such. I then provided that documentation to her but she declined wanting to see it. 3- lots of people get this stuff online and none of it is legitimate. You are from Washington and your tester is from Utah so clearly this is made up. Answer: nope not made up. Please call the tester she will verify that she has met with us face to face to run me and my animal through a battery of tests in order for her to sign off of the certification.
This went on and on.
I provided a copy of the Utah State law as it pertains to service animals. I provided a copy of my doctor’s letter stating I would benefit from a service animal. I provided evidence of passing the public access test, the requirements of the test, the testers name & phone number but the store clerk stated she was not interested and had no interest contacting the individual who conducted the testing.
I was harassed by these women. My rights as a disabled person were violated. My animal had done absolutely nothing to show any negative conduct/behavior upon entering today. They treated this entire incident extremely poorly and have violated the American Disability Act so blatantly it was utterly ridiculous and disgusting!
I am a very conscientious handler. Go view my instagram page @henna_the_doberman and all fears, questions of it’s validity will be put to rest.
