First, I'm saying this with the caveat that I am aware that this is a resale shop, and they're therefore limited at least in part by what people bring in to sell to them. This review is mostly intended to help other fat people avoid a disappointing trip.
I'm about a 2x-4x depending on brand. I usually avoid resale clothing shops because they very rarely have anything in my size, but I went in here with higher hopes than I should have because their social media sells them as being closely aligned with many of my values (they're queer-owned, leftist, a bunch of other great things), and I assumed that extended to fat liberation & size inclusivity. Unfortunately, after doing many loops around the store, I left without buying anything because I couldn't find a single thing that fit me well.
In most sections of the store, their size categories only went up to XL. There were a few where the highest size category was "XL & XXL", and I tried looking in those, but still did not find anything that fit me (I also found a size 16 top in an "XL & XXL" section, which shows you what the store considers plus size). I saw a very small handful of things that I think might have fit me if I tried them on, but I could tell just from looking at them on the hanger that they would not have been flattering on me at all.
The person working in the store was coolly polite when I approached them with questions, but also never really approached me or offered assistance, though I can't say for sure if that was because I'm fat or because that's just how they are with everyone (my friend and I were the only customers in the store at the time, so I don't have any comparison). If that's just how they are with everyone, that's fine and I genuinely don't mind, but it did stick out to me because of the many experiences I've had in clothing stores of sales associates happily assisting thin customers but ignoring me.
Again, I get that this is a resale shop... but I do feel like there have to be ways they could proactively seek out actual plus size clothing so that fat people can shop in their store. Ultimately, while I'm sure this is a cool shop if you're thin, I just really can't recommend going here for clothing...
Read moreFabulous resale shop! I have been dreaming of finding a shop like this in Tacoma. Great selection of cool vintage and used clothes, fair prices, and the BEST vibes. The owner and staff are really friendly and welcoming and made my experience shopping with my 10 month old baby accessible and delightful. This was the first time since having a baby it's been possible for me to shop with my baby in tow and I felt truly welcomed and supported. Such a different experience than trying to go to other vintage and thrift shops in town with my baby with me. I found a range of sizes and styles that allowed me to create several outfits that help me feel good in my body and more like myself again. I love the community space they have created and I am really excited to make Black Sheep my go-to for clothes shopping...
Read moreBest thrift in Tacoma! Curated collection with various styles and inclusive sizing! Faeryn helped me from start to finish with prompt customer service, helping set aside and price a necklace on a mannequin, getting the biggest fitting room to accommodate me and my little one in a stroller, getting a shirt down from display. I like western, boho, and grunge styles personally and found everything I liked with ease. They also have 70s/80s/90s styles just to name a few (seriously the style selection is somehow curated but also eclectic at the same time). Ended up getting a super cute rodeo trucker style hat, American eagle jean skirt with slit, silver and gold retro daisy necklace, and north face tie dye sweats. Love this place, what...
