Absolutely Disgusting Experience — Health Department Should Investigate
I had high hopes for the newly opened Shop Fair Supermarket in Hempstead, especially since it replaced the beloved Japanese supermarket that served our community for years. While I was initially impressed with the clean and organized look of the store, my experience today left me absolutely disgusted and furious.
As I was shopping and placing bread into my basket from the bakery section using the tongs provided, I noticed a live insect crawling on the bread. Shocked and disturbed, I immediately notified one of the store employees. Unfortunately, he didn’t understand English. I tried telling two more workers, but again, none of them could comprehend what I was saying. A fellow customer had to step in and translate for me.
Despite that, all three workers looked at me blankly—as if a bug crawling on fresh bread wasn’t a health hazard. No action was taken.
Not giving up, I went to the front of the store and spoke to a woman who seemed to be a manager or head cashier. I explained the situation and pointed out the exact section. She said “OK,” walked over, glanced at the area… and did absolutely nothing. I stayed in the store a little longer just to see if someone would remove or inspect the bread. They left it sitting there as if nothing had happened.
This is not only irresponsible, it is unsanitary and dangerous. You have a brand-new store, and when a customer goes out of their way to report contaminated food, your staff ignores it to avoid the loss of profit? That is outrageous.
The only item I purchased was a bottle of orange juice — and only because it was sealed. I will not be returning to this location. If a store can’t take basic hygiene and food safety seriously, especially after being explicitly told there was a bug on their bread, then it doesn’t deserve to be in business.
This place needs to be held accountable. I’m seriously considering filing a complaint with the Nassau County Department of Health.

Read moreVery rarely I give a buisness establishment a perfect 5 stars. This buisness so deserves it . I was mesmerized at the quality of the produce, tropical fruits and vegetables. The butcher section was clean and a large variety of fresh and smoke meats . The seafood section looks fresh caught of the day . All the fish were firm and glossy and looked really fresh . The deli section was absolutely my favorite . Very reasonable prices half the cost of food bazaar . The wonderful young lady that helped us , her name is jasmine or jamilla was truly a wonderful person. It was my first time and I didnt even ask, everything I wanted she gave me a sample. She spoke great English and because of her I had to write this review . I truly hope your boss reads this. The staff are extremely helpful. You ask a question and get the help required immediately. The super market is very clean and offers fresh hot food to go. Also the bakery section with a variety of coffees and fresh juices and smoothies. Now here's the best part the prices per products beat aldi's by 50 cents, lower or even a few dollars . If you're on a budget or have a large family this is the place to shop. . However please note don't park in the large parking lot it requires a permit or you will get a 50 dollar ticket . Park in the lot directly on front street . Hoping they can keep their prices budget friendly in the...
Read moreWe went here for the first time. Way back from original asian grocery that has been here for so many years, we went before because of Asian products we like.
This kind of grocery products are mostly Spanish products. Yes they have international isle but a little bit from Asia. The prices of Asian products are expensive not competitive. A particular product we usually gets from 99 ranch or super FL asian groceries price is 2.49 to 3.79 but here is 3.49 to 5.99.
If you want to get Spanish products I can say they have good varieties. The produces so far are fresh. They have Spanish cook foods like at some Spanish deli. I can conclude that if you want mostly Spanish products you can come here but not for us since we like Asian products. We really looking for a good nearby asian grocery. And if I need Spanish items we like we have a few near our home. This one is out of the way and a bit far.
The place since its new they look decent and clean. But some breads are a downer, when we check the dates its 2 days expired. Maybe they need to check the...
