We are a frequent customer and have never experienced any service as bad as the one in the Walnut Creek location, on California Street. Our impression is the grooming front desk workers do not want to do their jobs. They just sit there, get paid, and do not have to do anything. The managers, at least the available one at that tim, is incompetent. These types of employees are eroding Petco shareholders' value.
On Sunday morning, Sept 23, 2012, we came in the grooming area behind the glass door, stood there, politely waiting for one of the workers in the front desk to look at us, but none. Finally, we had to get their attention by asking if a nail service is available. A girl looked up with a heavy face and asked for the Rabies certificate. We showed her a signed form from our Vet from another state certified that our dog was vacinated. This same form has been accepted everywhere else, including the major airlines. She said that she did not know if the date is the expiration date or the date the dog was vacinated. I have been in the States for 20 years, but have a light accent. My husband, a native American, thought that she did not understand me. So he came in and explained the form to her. She did not accept it either. We asked for the store manager, hopefully somebody will understand the form. We waited for a long time and finally somebody told us that the store manager is conveniently out for lunch. After another 15 minutes, another manager showed up. He took the vacination form, went to talk to the girl in the grooming area. He came back told us that he was trying to understand. My husband read the form out loud, which clearly stated that the Vet certified that the dog was vacinated on the date, with her name, clinic phone number and other information. The manager did not even bother to read the form, just based on what the girl told him, repeated the girl’s argument. We were surprised how incompetent these employees are. They are unable to understand a simple form.
We went to another local grooming store and the certificate was accepted there. The nail was done in an instant without hassle, bad attitude and much cheaper. Petco just lost a loyal customer, and certainly many others if they keep hire these types...

While picking up my Pekingese today after he had a bath and grooming, the technician informed me that my dog had removed his own nail from the nail bed - she showed me the nail. She told me that he was pawing at the holding cage and pulled out his own nail. What??? All I know is that the pain must have been excruciating to say the least. I can't imagine any dog, and especially my dog with such a timid temperament, pawing at the cage so hard and long enough to pull his own nail out from the nail bed!!! Both of my dogs and cat are rescue, this dog in particular, I adopted from Norcal Rescue. He is very timid, shy, obedient, and very, very sweet -- I can't imagine what he went through today. He has already been through trauma before I adopted him. I will be taking him to his Vet to make sure that his toe doesn't become infected. I will Never bring my pets to PetCo ever again nor will I shop there. Also, I had a negative experience at the PetCo on Concord Ave., Concord, the service was horrible and the manager was talking away with another customer. She wouldn't even give me the time of day, and I had both of my small dogs with me. ...
