First of all, immense gratitude for Sylvan team. Still recalled 8 years ago, after a regular end of year meeting with school teacher at local elementary, when pressed about what can be done to make our boy better, the teacher replied, that may be English could strengthen. This comment sent us, first generation immigrants ourself, into panic mode and in search for the Academic equivalent of cavalry for rescue. That teacher’s comment was the thread that started our 8 year journey with Sylvan. We came to Sylvan, and after a brief assessment, we were told that our boy was not actually behind, but we could sharpen his skills a little further, and we officially started with Sylvan, we were given a completely tailored program that adjusted to our son’s progress, and half way through the year, the teacher suggested that we could change the teaching subject to math because he was way above the expected level of performance in the language area, and we gladly accepted the suggestion. 2 years later, now in Middle School and trying hard on accelerated math class that combined 2 years in one, with newly minded curriculum and brand new teacher still searching out for directions himself, we returned to Sylvan as our son asked to be placed to Sylvan again. After first meeting on the returning tour, our son emerged from the class, and told us: “ if our teacher at school teach us this way, there is no need for me to be here( at Sylvan)”. Our boy’s academic career took off, eventually exceeding all the existing Sylvan’s class standard design, but he insisted in coming to Sylvan and and tortured tutors, specially, James, a fantastic math and science tutor that is Berkeley graduate himself. Our son would throw improvised questions in all AP and honors course materials of math and chemistry, and James would help thinking through the process and became a secret trump card my son always relied to ace out. He went on the become the main coach for Math Count at Middle school for subsequent years.
Fast forward, our daughter needed to prepare to jump 8th grade math Sylvan again came to rescue. We could not believe our ears when the girl uttered after first 1 hour session: “ I wished our teachers all teach like this”. Such an familiar statement. Managed to skip one year of math course and our girl is doing well now taking Algebra 1, with support that James provides.
While the tutors have been uniformly great( well, great vs greater, just splitting hairs if we insist), the coordinator and administrators are simply fantastic. When there is urgent need to add hours due to incoming test, or need to shift hours due to performances, doctors visits, Nina and Karen on the administrative side would simply help and coordinate. Over last 8 years we yet have to hear a “ not possible” as answer with Sylvan.
I know that our public schools in the district are far superior than other districts, but still our teachers are stretched a little thin from time to time, and Sylvan just happen to be a perfect add on. We have been...
Read moreI am so thankful for Sylvan in Walnut Creek! If I could give 100 stars I would. My daughter came to them last year two grade levels behind in math. With the support and love of the teachers and directors, my daughter has caught up and even is a grade level ahead in math now. I cannot thank this center enough for all they have done. They teach each child individually and target specifically what they need. They have meetings with parents to give you specific information on your child so that you are in partnership with them on your child’s learning. I can not recommend Sylvan in Walnut Creek enough. It is an amazing place to help your child or give them an advantage in school. Th confidence and academic success they have given my daughter...
