Proper Cloth - DC — Local services in Washington

It was a very disappointing experience to say the least. My fiancé and I were told by a friend they recommended this place as they had seen the quality of the suits and we decided to check it out. When we arrived we were greeted kindly and asked if we had an appointment to which we answered no. The gentlemen then explained that they basically only take appointments if we needed assistance with looking at their suits. We were a little taken aback by the answer since on the website it does not say they only take appointments, but it does say it highly recommends them. Even in the store there is no indication of appointments only or that walk-ins are only to see the showcase suits. Luckily enough we did have time the next day to stop by and we did make an appointment.

The next day we arrive and once again we are greeted and sat down for our appointment time. The associate that helped us was nice, but my fiancé and myself did notice that he did not acknowledge her as he continued through the fitting process. She would make a comment about whatever was happening at that moment and the associate did not have any type of conversation to engage with us. It was a very minimum back and forth in terms of connecting with us. The measuring process was detailed and easy, but after he had saved my information for ordering we were basically directed to go on their site to see the suits. We asked if there was examples in the store for us to try on and he explained that the suits were only showcase and we could not try them on, but we could drape them on my body to see how it looks. Even on the website there it does say the showroom suits aren't for purchase, but it also does not state they aren't for trying on either. There was no further explanation of what possible materials on the suit or what style, what type of buttons they have, or even a sample of swatches to see what is available.

Why would you want to go to a suit place and not have been shown any type of examples or even be able to try something similar to what you have in mind? Why would I have to order a suit first just to see what it would look like on me? The process was just a big waste of time and honestly if this was a one off time of situation it left such a bad impression that we ended up with going to a different suit provider and their experience was LEAGUES above this. Granted the place does look great and from what we were able to see in the showroom it was high quality, but other than that this place was more show than...

Summary: abysmal service, poor ability to take measurements. Avoid at all costs if you want something tailored.

We’d been looking for a place that tailors business shirts and were very pleased to learn that Proper Cloth had opened up physical stores so that we could see the fabrics and get alterations done in person. First we tried a shirt. We had made a fourth appointment with Jordan, the person assigned to work with us in the DC outlet. (Yes you read that right – after 4 attempts the shirt still was not sitting right on the body. And it's not that we're fussy - it was so obviously ill fitting). Jordan knows that we live outside DC and it takes us close to an hour to get there for the appointment. Unfortunately at our last appointment, we showed up for the appointment (after repeated confirmation with Jordan) only to learn that Jordan had left the outlet earlier that day due to a “personal emergency”. We absolutely understand that these things happen. However, there was no ‘warning’ from him, or from the outlet. So we unfortunately only discovered his absence after making the trip in to DC – and paying for parking. The person who was sitting at the desk near the door was very nonchalant about Jordan’s absence. He did not voluntarily offer to assist us, and only after hearing us discuss alternate plans, said something like “oh, I didn't say I wouldn't help …”; as if he was doing us a favor. We were absolutely done with Proper Cloth at this point and left the outlet. We are writing this a few weeks after the incident, because we were curious to know whether Jordan / the outlet would reach out to us to reschedule the appointment. And yes, there’s been no contact whatsoever; so the shirt has been returned.

Materials used for both shirt and pants are good quality for the money, pity they are very poor with the measurements (cant seem to get them right despite multiple tries); and have awful service. (The pants also did not fit right, we sent it to our private alteration lady to get it fixed)

Anna is fabulous. She’s da bomb. She is patient and kind and really understanding. Cool down to earth. The store is run really well. Staff is respectful of each other and everyone is just there to have a great time and to make sure you look good. I’m really glad that I went to this location. It is still new, so there are a lot of appointments available. The shirts and suits came from Vietnam really fast and they were done very well. The re-fit appointment went smoothly as well.
