I've been a member of various YMCA facilities and numerous gyms throughout the country. This is a nice YMCA with very friendly and helpful staff. It is clean, and provides childcare at certain hours. It also offers organized sports for kids, such as soccer, basketball, volleyball, flag football, karate, etc., but those activities cost extra.
It has a nice, full-length indoor basketball court, but it is often being used for organized games, including kids' volleyball. It also has two indoor racketball courts.
However, Waxahachie seems to have outgrown this particular YMCA, which appears to have been built when the town was much smaller. Recent years have seen an explosion in growth, and Waxahachie is no longer the small little town it once was. As a result, this YMCA is now a bit small and often gets very crowded. The free weight room is relatively small with only one squat rack and one bench press station. So during peak hours, the comparatively small free weight room gets packed and you often have to wait. To compound the problem, the hours are not as long compared to other gyms which stay open much later. For instance, this YMCA closes at 6 pm on Fridays, right around the time when most people are finishing their daily work shift. I'm guessing this might be due to a staffing issue as many places are hurting for staff.
It has plenty of cardio equipment, such as treadmills and stationary bikes and ellipticals. It also has a relatively small weight machine room separate from the free weight room. It includes two separate showers/bathrooms/lockers for each gender, which is nice.
The outdoor pool is nice and is 25 yards with various lanes and a deep end, but no diving board. It does have diving blocks for summer league swim meets, though. However, the pool is open only during the summer months. Much of the pool is often used up with scheduled classes or for swim team practice. There is sometimes one lane open for lap swimming, though.
All in all, it's a good YMCA with great staff, but the explosive population growth in Waxahachie has resulted in serious overcrowding at this gym during peak hours. Unfortunately, Waxahachie doesn't have very many other family-friendly fitness facilities to choose from. So if the population growth trend continues, this particular YMCA will continue to experience...
Read moreWould have given ZERO stars but It wouldn't let me. My daughter dropped two Pandora bracelets out of her gym bag while visiting this establishment during Christmas break. When she called (on a Saturday) she was informed that they were turned into the front desk. We called back on Monday and we were told that they were gone and couldn't be found. After a week we called back and finally talked to the Executive Director and he didn't know what happened to them. He informed us that he was doing an internal investigation and would let us know. We never found out what happened to the bracelets. I emailed the Executive Director on February 7, 2024, and haven't received anything back from him. I also called and left voicemails and have not received any call back from him. I guess I will have to talk to someone higher than him to get answers as to how they let a staff member steal...
Read moreI started out with 0 experience in swimming. The class was paced a little faster than I had hoped for. I practiced for a few hours on my own and I was confidently swimming and floating after the first week. I didn't expect to be able to do both after only 1 week. There were quite a few people who had basic swimming skills. I felt a little pressured to get swimming down. The time of day was perfect for a swim class because the sun wasn't as hot. I was a little uncomfortable learning so many new things when I expected it to be a slow paced class. Overall it helped because I am able to swim. I plan to take more private lessons with Nathan in the future to work on my technique. I am happy with the success I found with swimming. I wish they offered the adult class in the morning as well. If you are an adult learning to swim this is the perfect place to take...
