Update. Memorial Day Weekend. I learned on my visit here from a newer employee. The books here are inventoried in their computer database in their store's sections by the author and by the title only. Not by the subject matter.
So, if you're seeking a historical book, for example, say it's about Memorial Day, and you don't have a particular titled book known to you. You'll need to seek it randomly in their historical section (by the military section).
Or by the store's holiday section, at the store's back wall, next to (the children's section).
This is the case here in most scenarios, except if you are visiting the Performing Arts section, seeking a music biography on a particular music artist. Those books, on the other hand, are alphabatized by artists name.
Quite a few of the old faces have moved on and were replaced with a few that aren't as familiar after revisiting several times since three years or so ago when I last updated.
This store is my go-to place for vinyl (and all things entertainment). The big difference is that their records aren't half price anymore.
Three years ago, many of your popular vinyl recordings were once found regularly in the display shelf for around $10 - $20, on average for each popular record vinyl, at this location. They're (goldmine) now in the locked boxes at more than twice that amount than three years ago. Mostly, $30 and upwards to around $100. These records are mostly only your massive released industry stereo variety pop vinyl Lps from the 70s and 80s. A few are newer reissues.
Nothing ever seen here, quite as rare as the mobile fidelity (mfsl), Japanese issued (obi), or even your U.S. mono or quadraphonic (Sq) limited issued vinyls that are playable or collectible. They still do treat it like it was valuable jewelry or gold behind a locked glass case!
They've had to add one locked viewing box to three total viewing, locked boxes now. Silly, I know. Also, it seems to me that there have been fewer people trading in their collections, to more collections of their junk records lately.
You gotta love coming out to the Village Real Shopping Center location. Since they moved from across NASA Pkwy, from Egret Bay Blvd, and across from the Ichibon Sushi Bar and Grill.
Half Price Books and Records, at this location, is only one in a handful of this brand of chain stores left for retail business in the Greater Houston area. I personally know that two of my once favorite locations were closed in 2021. One was torn down to make way for new building construction in Montrose.
Most are overpriced. I know because I compare their prices online at several sites. It is the luck of the draw what you discover here. I usually pick a random day and time when I am local to this vicinity for record shopping.
They used to order record crates and other vinyl accessories, too. Like the plastic outer sleeves, or to replace those torn dingy yellow eighties paper inner sleeves for records.
Not anymore. I dropped a star this time. My regular place once for shopping vinyl is now...
Read moreI always loved this place. It was amazing to find things from the past. I just never thought I would run into my ex and the homewrecker here too. It's been so long and they looked so unhappy. I didn't feel happy or sad. I was too happy looking with my wife for certain rare items. They looked horrible I just hope they are happy no matter how much they seemed to fit into the 👌 hand me down section of the store. (Shade aside) . It was just good to know I was beyond that mentality. Why, are you writing this if you're over it or whatever you may ask? Well sometimes things happen we can't control and having them happen may not only help you but, talking about them may help someone realize it does get better for you. This is a review for the store but, a little more coming somewhere that has old things does more than just living in the past it helps cope for us living in the future. We had purchased a book as well while there and it all came together. The ones who don't believe in everything that happens for a reason can stop reading here. My wife randomly opened the book and it read as follows: " Next time you feel agitated because you are falling back into past patterns, remember that simply being aware that you are repeating the past, is a sign of progress" "Self-awareness comes before the leap forward in your personal transformation"
So yeah a little long but, just know there is always reward (bad or good) in your past you just don't...
Read moreThe store has most popular books and most of the classics. Decent music and games section but, overall a small store for a half priced books. I recently tried to sell 20 books here, most were new, popular, and had recently just been released. The man who does the book appraisals there normally (thinks and dresses like he is a New York Times book critic and thinks he possesses a psychic ability to value used books) decided (after making me wait 30 min even though I was only person in the store) to offer me $4.50 total. I was so insulted that I swore never to sell another book to them ever (I’m a 68 year old War Vet and this guy knew it). He then told me “to limp my old a** out of “his” store before he gets really angry.” I felt frightened because it was just me and him and one female cashier (somewhere in the back of the store). I really think he intended/wanted to push me down if I gave him any lip and then tell the police that I must have slipped or fell. Needless to say, I won’t go back and a WARNING to other ELDERLY people be careful if the store is near empty because you might end up in a bad situation, especially if your a woman. Hope this helps at least one person. STAY AWAY FROM THIS AGE...
