Sometimes writing a review of a business brings pleasure—it allows one to share a joyful story of a great meal or a wonderful family gathering. Other times, however, it is not so easy, especially when the experience falls short of expectations. Yet, the purpose of a review is to offer an honest and clear description that can help others decide where to go. In this case, I feel compelled to share my visit to East Star Chinese Buffet on NASA Road 1 on August 18 2025.
The restaurant itself is arranged in an elongated space with a rather limited buffet at the center. While they present a variety of dishes, very few could truly be called “Chinese” beyond the fried rice and some cooked vegetables. The rest seemed to be a mix of generic offerings without much authenticity.
Unfortunately, cleanliness and presentation are serious issues here. The establishment does not give the impression of being properly sanitized. The chairs are in poor condition, the decorations are old and dusty, and from what I could observe, the kitchen itself did not appear clean. The restrooms, to put it kindly, are best avoided if possible.
The staff, however, was a bright spot in the experience. They were cordial and prompt in their service, attending to our table with politeness and efficiency. The kitchen staff also seemed attentive to making sure the buffet trays looked fresh and full.
That said, the real disappointment was the food. Many items appeared old, were served at the wrong temperature, and lacked both flavor and appeal. I tried to find something worth eating but left without success. It was disheartening that in a city like Houston, known for its wide range of dining options, this establishment falls so far below standard.
Finally, the price does not reflect the quality of the experience. Like many places in the area, it is high for what is offered, making the visit even harder to recommend.
In summary, East Star Chinese Buffet offers friendly service but suffers from poor food quality, lack of cleanliness, and an overall disappointing atmosphere. If you are seeking an enjoyable Chinese dining experience, I would suggest exploring other...
Read moreThis restaurant has actually always been enjoyable every time my family and i have been here. We travel farther from home, passing multiple other restaurants to eat here. This 1 star review is based off my experience today one in which my mom, grandma and myself were treated unbelievable by a waitress. I don’t even remember her being the *only waitress waiting on us, but when the check came my mother left me her card to pay in which i was going to walk the check to pay upfront while her and my grandma went to the restroom before we left. The waitress insisted she had to take the check up to the counter to pay and told me to sit and wait at the table. So i did. In which she returned with the check so i filled in the amount but left the tip area blank because my mom had the cash for the tip but hadn’t returned from the restroom. She asked me if i was going to write in the tip amount and i told her no that my mom had the cash instead. She argued with me that she had in-fact seen my mom and grandma leaving the building and they were not in the restroom. I told her that i KNEW they were in the restroom (because i drove us there and had the keys in my pocket) but she rolled her eyes and shook her head as she grabbed the plates from the table. I then told her that i would go check on them in the restroom and as i walked away she started talking more starting with “Oh my god, etc etc”. I found my family in the restroom and told them what just had happened. They were in disbelief. We hadn’t given anyone any trouble, made any complaints, caused any scenes. Just ate and acted as normal.. The group of waitresses were huddled up and then looked over at us as we walked from the restroom to the front counter to talk to the manager and told him what happened. My mom gave the cash tip to the manager just to prove a point. He said he would take care of it. I still can’t believe we were treated like that. Disgusting way to be treated as a paying...
Read moreFirst time trying this buffet, and I don’t think it’s a place I would be going back too by first choice. Let me start by saying the waitresses were wonderful! I was a bit taken back when I seen they had crawfish, but excited at the same time! Being as I never ate crawfish before I asked the waitress if she could explain it to me with taking off their shell, and what parts to eat. She didn’t have too, but she did take her time to explain it to me and I’m very thankful! Unfortunately their food wasn’t the greatest and they didn’t have a real big selection to choose from. Seemed to be more seafood options than meat options..I will say, they are a very extremely business from what I’ve seen tonight, I’m genuinely happy for them to be bringing in customers like that! It’s definitely the waitresses/waiters they have! Unfortunately there isn’t a lot of space between the buffet where the food is so it gets crowded a lot quicker than other places would at the food. I would also like to mention that just because it’s not my go to place, doesn’t mean it won’t be yours! I recommend giving anything a try once when it comes to...
